One more because I need another project. I raced one of these in the mid to late 80's and it was truly a great machine. Stable, fast and easy to fly. Going to scale down to two sheets or less foam board. F or C pack are the plan.

Did you ever try the Scatcat?

Did you ever try the Scatcat?
Yes I did. I flew three Quickies over the years competitively. The Quicky 500, Scatcat, and Quik-V (version 1). The Scatcat was the most successful for over the time I raced Quickie, but it was also the one I ran longest. The Quick-V was faster, BY FAR, but I only flew it for a couple years. The Quiky 500 was stable and rugged and far faster than it was given credit for if it was set up correctly. I even had it on floats for a race we had one year.

Hated the Scatcat, Quik-V was after our time. I had a young Jedi son who did pattern at 7, quicky500 at 9, Formula 1 with 65% nitro at age 11 at the Nats, then helis at 13(won second place at Nats) and jumped to heli FAI at 15. Won either first or second place no matter what he did when we were on the competition trail. Even held heli clinics at age 13!!!! setting up and instructing fliers how to improve. Career ended at 17 when he went to college.

I designed a quicky wing where I hot wired an undercut foam wing, glued 1/2 " carbon fibers across the wing for strength and then covered it using balsa caps then and monocote it. Fit the guage to check wings and came in light in weight. Allowed us to add weight balance so it didn't drop in turns. He always flew at about 10 ft off the ground. With F1's, he use to scare the crap out of the pylon workers cutting it low and very sharp at that speed.

V3 working copy plans finally ready to work on cutting and prototype assembly. Fairly simple build if it goes well. Should be fun.

Well Have the templates cut out for the V3 plans and it looks lite about 1 1/2 sheets. May go with a C pack but should still fly with less if I keep weight to a minimum. I have a couple new ideas that I may try out on a test wing before I decide if they will go in the final plans. After cutting out everything last night I really hope it flys as well as its original big brother.
One thing for certain motor cooling will be no problem but I need to add some cooling for the battery and the ESC.
Also servo install decisions need to be made. If I hold to the original that would be all internal with long pushrods, but short rod externals would be easy and quick. The wing servos will be dual no matter what internal with horns and rods on top.
Any opinions?

Well parts are cut out and ready to start assembling the little bugger. pic posted in 3rd post. I think a standard FT Firewall with a possible small mod should work. Still trying to decide on the best motor/prop/battery for this.

Added the wing build photos to the build log post (#3). Not perfect but nothing that can't be overcome. Carved tips from good old styrofoam cooler. Paper was removed from the entire inside of the wing, and ribs were added for shape. Spar is three layers of foam with a dihedral brace in the center. Now for the fuselage!

Added the first two photos of the fuselage build. Trying to stay with relatively traditional build style as much as possible. using gorilla glue for some parts like the fuselage main formers, hot glue for other parts like the wing and likely all of the fuselage top and bottom. I am going to move the hatch back to the top of the fuselage. I am also gluing on the wing. I am planning to maiden without gear but it will be getting them, so it will get a rudder. New motor will be in this weekend or Monday (2830 1300Kv) should take a 4S and 7 in prop. It should be pretty fast with that setup, we will see.

Added photos of fuselage build to third post. Motor is supposed to be here tomorrow so forward hatch can go on tomorrow night if I get motor on. Still need pushrods and servos. Vertical stab and wing need to be attached.

Added photos of wing to fuselage mate, hatches, motor and electronics beginning install in post #3. Control surfaces cut and ready. I installed the 3530 1700Kv. motor that arrived today in the interest of going with the Quickie theme (overpowered race plane) alone with a 30 amp ESC. Also began getting servos in place (3-9g, 1-5q). Motor takes a 7 inch prop and 3-4s battery. Ought to be pretty fast.

Posted pics of airframe completed and ready to maiden (for the most part.) in post 3. Nose heavy but so was the original. Hoping to maiden next week. I will get overall photo before flying.

Added the full airframe shots. Only change I may make is which Rx /Tx combination I go with. Nose heavy with the 4s battery, but I may still add gear before the first flight.

Looking good!!!!

All you need is to put a wide color strip on the other wing and you are ready for racing. What color(s) Q-500 did you have for your racing?

My colors were orange and charcoal fuselage, medium blue top of wing, white or cream bottom of wing, charcoal tail feathers. Orange and black stripes on RH or LH top of the wing with AMA racing number (last two digits back then). I actually wanted just one set of stripes because of my old scheme, plus it will help with orientation. I’m thinking a bit more color would not hurt though. May still put gear on before flying. Just not sure.

Here is my 9 year old son's plane. Mine had 2 thin black strips on each side of the center black. No adult could ever beat his flying including me.
