Ok, I'm a new forum member but I've been using Foamboard for model airplanes for about a year now, though I originally started flying RC with my Dad in the late 80's early 90's, so I'm not exactly "new" to the hobby, though during my long hiatus a lot has changed with the cost and capability of RC equipment (for the better!)

Anyways, I bought and flew a few FT designs before I decided I wanted to start designing my own stuff, figured I'd share here. A lot of them have flown, but not all of them. Usually it goes, if I do the math right beforehand, it flies OK. If I don't do all of the math (correctly) first, then it doesn't. Shocker.

My first attempt. 1.X meter span, 3D printed fuselage pod and bits, Walmart carbon arrow shaft tailboom. Flew OK, but tremendous lack of lateral control. Had to force it down rather than lose it in the trees, I wanted to be able to recover all of the pieces.

Second plane. 1.5-ish meter span. 3D printed fuselage and bits, a real carbon shaft for the boom this time (no more flexing!) Flew great. Eventually scrapped to use the electronics in something else

Third plane. Seeing a bit of a theme here? Again, ~1.5m span, 3D printed fuse, carbon boom, blah blah. Was trying to make the fuselage narrower and give the wing a more sophisticated airfoil. Other than insufficient downthrust, flew great. Also eventually salvaged for parts. I actually build a second one like it with a few tweaks and gave it to my Dad. We've had a few electronics issues with it but it still flies fine.

A profile aerobatic plane I whipped up in a few hours. Embarrassingly crude, pretty wonky flying, but it's wild what you can do with control surfaces that large. Salvaged for parts after a few flights.

My first biplane. My son really wanted me to build a biplane but my heart wasn't into it. Wings never aligned quite right so it wanted to roll all of the time, wickedly overpowered, but still flew OK. Salvaged for parts after a few flights.

A rather scale (in profile, at least) Pilatus Turbo Porter. Flew quite well for about 20 seconds, then the wing folded in half. My mistake, poor construction. Ugly damn plane.

Third attempt at a wing. ALSO didn't fly. Why did my wings not fly? Because I didn't do my homework. I've since figured out how I need to build these and have tested with some hand-launch miniature wings. I'll circle around to making an RC wing again eventually.

First attempt at making something fast, and it sure was quick. First time I've crashed a plane because I couldn't stay on top of it, this thing was wild, just wasn't stable enough. I laughed the whole time.

An evolution of the previous plane with more wing. Not quite as fast, but infinitely more controllable. Flew it a handful of times, kept breaking props on landing. Sloppily built airframe. Salvaged for parts after several flights.

1m 2-ch sailplane designed for simplicity of build and flight. Not sure how well it flies, it has only had a few very short attempts, slope soaring is essentially non-existent where I live and I didn't have any provision for hi-start/winch.

Second prototype of the previous sailplane. Slight changes to dihedral, tail volumes, wing construction. Rigged a hook to the bottom for a mild hi-start. Kind of worked. Hit a power line. I'll circle back to this project eventually, too.

Little plane I threw together for my daughter using the FT EZ plane stuff. Flies extremely well and she does a good job with it.

My latest creation. I've been messing around, trying to find something I can teach my son on, this one seems to be it and I've had him on the sticks via buddy-box a few times lately. It's a bit tail heavy, but flies really well. Can cruise around on ~35% power and just be happy. Has way more power than is necessary, so I've already scaled the design up ~10% in CAD to run on the same electronics, just haven't actually built the bigger version yet.


I have several more projects that currently just live on my PC waiting to be finished and built whenever time allows and I stop getting distracted by other things like my 2m RES balsa glider kit that I'm in the middle of, and now I've decided to give the foamboard speed challenge a try so I'll be working on a design (or multiple for that)

I have a little bit of video footage for some of the planes I'll try to share eventually, too.

I think the reason for the first and second wings not flying is they seem like they would be too nose heavy.. The last one looks like it would fly, but getting the CG would be pretty hard due to the short wing cord.
*Not sure, but just guesses....Keep on building!

You're actually mostly correct! CG was an issue on the first two, but all three had the issue that I did not take reflex into account.

I really like the design of those gliders - I've been looking for a good 3D printed glider for a while but they're all too heavy

Glad you like it! The 3D printing is great, but yes, heavy and I get the impression that they're fragile. That's why I've yet to make a fully printed plane.

I use 3D printing on these gliders for the fuselage pod, tail group attachment, control horns, things like that and then DTFB for the wings and tail surfaces. I believe all of them have come in under 400g using the FT 1806 motor and 2S 800mah battery.

Looks like it flies beautifully. I'm used to jets that fall out of the sky if you so much as think about slowing down, so my first reaction when I saw how slow it was flying was to make sure the video wasn't paused. You might be giving another project to tackle at some point in the future

I mostly build 3D printed planes, and yeah, they're definitely much heavier than foamboard. I haven't had many issues with strength though

I have more ideas than time

I am sure I am not alone with this issue, but it certainly rings true. I do a lot of thinking when driving or when at work and I come up with plenty of ideas. However, by the time dinner is over and the kids are in bed (I have 4 with a 5th arriving soon) and the washing up is done, I don't have as much time as I'd like and my brain gets too tired to do much meaningful design work. As a result, I've a fair few projects in various stages that I'd love to follow through on, though at this point I don't even know which one to work on any more!

Here's a selection of what I've got going on. I apologize for the names, I usually call my planes whatever comes to mind first:

Blap. 1200mm span, 4 channel, wood and 3DP with CF spar. Design unfinished.

Carolina Queen ~1650mm span sailplane, 3DP with DTFB flying surfaces and carbon boom. I actually built this plane in its entirety but was so unpleased with how the wing came out that I scrapped it. The concept was something to fly in the seemingly always windy conditions around here and I'd like to revisit it again.

Drip. 900mm span, all DTFB, design start for the Amphibious airplane challenge currently going on. Got stumped on how I want to shape the fuselage so I haven't touched it in a while.

DumbleDee Plus. A 10% upscaled version of my highly successful DumbleDee park flyer. Design is done, haven't built it.

Mercury V2. 900mm span, design for 180-200mph flight, full 3DP and CF spars, etc. First time using AI for design help, mostly on the electronics side of things (I'm not impressed). Haven't finished the design, will be a bit pricey to build anyways.

Mercury V3. 1000mm span, designed for ~160mph, possibly more. This time no AI. I feel more confident about this one, ironically enough. Haven't finished the design, have studied some more aero stuff lately that's making me rethink some things anyways.

Paper Boy. 1000mm span, 2 channel DTFB pure glider. I've built two of these, actually, and they have been test flown. An ongoing development to make a DTFB glider that is relatively easy to build but perform well. Need to continue the development.

I've got some other stuff, too, but in less developed stages. Full-scale (manned) stuff, too. I've got enough projects to make a full time job out of it if I could get someone to pay me to do so, lol.

Your Super Kaos sure brings back memories. How come no bipes?
If you scroll waaay up to my original post some time ago, you'll see that I did indeed build and fly a biplane!

Honestly? I don't dislike biplanes, I just don't have any overwhelming urge to build them.

That contest is what got me working on those designs, actually. I've yet to fly the DTFB one I've built for the contest because for the past few weeks here it has been either 100+ degrees out or thunderstorms.

We'll see if I continue design work on those two, I may just start yet another design applying some better aero concepts.

What kind of layout are you thinking? Add cowling around the motor and a spinner and those look pretty darn good to me

Well, the general layout would be approximately the same though I keep wondering if a high/shoulder wing really is the best or if I should investigate a low or mid wing. I also want to focus on the wing-to-fuselage interface a little more as well as possibly reducing the size of the vertical stabilizer. It's all obviously a balancing act between weight, stiffness, wetted area, etc.

Mid wing would be great so as to keep the thrust line in plane with the wing, but now my spar crosses through the battery compartment which doesn't really work too well.

Vertical stabilizer reduction could be accomplished by extending the tail, but now I take a hit to weight and stiffness. Alternatively could reduce the wingspan so as to reduce the required stabilizer area, but reducing the aspect ratio comes with its own set of conditions. I've kind of set the rough span based off of using a 1m length of CF tube, I want as much span as possible supported by it.

I dunno, it'll probably remain mostly the same. I tinkered with a new wing in CAD last night and got frustrated, I need to go back and re-do my airfoil sketch blocks, the way they are now cause some issues. Also, lofting wingtips is tricky.
