Giant Plane Builds into 2022

Really nice work all around. The laser cut parts look really clean and it looks like it is all coming together pretty quickly so far. These big models take time but I'll admit I'm impressed with how fast this is building. Are you planning to glass and paint, or cover with low temp film, or something else?

On this plane, I will prep it with lightweight filler and sand everything smooth then I am going to coat it with polyacrylic. As far as final finish, I haven't made my mind up exactly what paint I will use so that's still to be determined

****One thing I wanted to note, I'm not posting this build as I'm building it, so I am currently ahead of the posts on here. At this current time the posts are about a week behind actual building**** Back to the build.... after getting the ideas draw up on the wing and how I want it to mount, I started sheeting on the front half of the fuse. I also needed to make access holes to get to the bolts that mount the two fuselage halves together. compartment doors are going to be at the access points and the two side doors will be magnetic since the wing will cover them once its installed. I also added more support to the underside of the fuselage in-between the formers.

Wing spar mount, I cut everything out and have it tested fitted. the wing will slide into this holder and be bolted into place. i will add mounting bolts behind the spar that go into the side of the wing later.

Custom fiberglass Wing Socket

This is a link to how I make wing tube sockets..... in this video I made the two sockets that are going into the inboard center section of the wing. I will make two more for the outboard when I get started on the build of the outboard wing panels.

I'm in the process of making a set of retracts, how ever I will use fix gear at first. Time will be the factor at this point, everything is being made from scratch.

Starting with fixed gear is definitely your best bet to keep the weight under 55lbs.

I'm very dubious about those giant metal blocks for your scaled-up retracts though; I would caution you greatly against simply "scaling up" an RC-style retract, and instead look at more realistic full-scale style mechanism. Those metal billets are gonna hurt your weight HARD.

Everything else is looking great! Awesome progress!

Ben, thank you for the input, BTW your 1/4 scale c47 is awesome . Let me elaborate a little, The gear isn't exactly " scaled up" I only used the basic design from a spring-air style retrack and (highly) modified it to get the correct geometry . I have made a set of these about 3/4 of this size for a past project, they end up being extreme overkill for these foam planes. I was going to make a scale gear, but the time factor would kill me. I am wanting to fly it this season. The photos I posted of the blocks are in the first stages of cutting everything out so there will be plenty of lightening up from those pictures. Lets face it "55 lbs." is a pipe dream, (cough cough I hope ama isn't reading in) I will have at least 35lbs in just electronics alone. (two 50cc electric motors, 2 escs, 4x 6s5000 batteries, 15 servos, 4 rx's, 4 2s1500 rx batteries, air pneumatics.) The weight will be what it is when its complete, the only thing I really care about at this point is strength and if it flys well.

I build things that fly (sometimes)

55.........POUNDS??

:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

She would float like a feather at that weight. Cube loading is real :D

On edit:

Full scale had a wing loading of AT BEST 504oz/sq ft and a cube loading of about 20

This model @ 55lbs has a wing loading of 10oz/sq ft and a cube loading of about 2 :eek::eek:. Similar to @Mid7night 's monster, he would probably be able to ride thermals with it :p

Soooo, I started into more projects, I will be posting those up in the near future, but here is the progress I was able to get on the b-25, the wing mount is glued in. I sheeted a few more sections and braced up the opening for the front gear along with under the wing mount.

Not a lot of progress because I’m bouncing between projects but I did get almost all the sheeting done on the fuselage.
