Hello everyone,
I've been lurking on this forum for around eight years, ever since I saw a Flite Test video about Masters Series P-47s (the one with the rubber ducks). That got me into RC and I had the usual ambitious goals, in my case a four-engine PB2Y "Coronado" which never came to be. It wasn't until a year and a half ago that I made my first model airplane, and it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I made one that actually flew more than once. Now that I've "made it", I figure I ought to join this forum for real.
A few things about me:
I am a big fan of 1930s aircraft, particularly if they've set a record or run a race. I took my username from a pilot in the "Bill Barnes" stories from that time period.
I am pretty cheap (I guess this is the RC forum for me!), so I tend to go with small, single engine builds. My one operational plane runs on a 2S battery and an A pack, and I don't plan to go bigger anytime soon.
On the flip side of things, I'm involved in the AIAA DBF team at my university. For those who don't know, the DBF contest involves Designing, Building and Flying a model airplane to meet a set of rules. The rules tend to be unusual, ditto the planes. The planes also tend to be very large, around 2/3 of giant scale. If there's any fellow DBF people here, nice to meet ya! And no, I can't leak the plans for my team's plane.
At the moment, my CAD software relies on an educational license. Since I'm one year from getting my Master's degree, I expect to transition my airplane modeling to Onshape or some similar free software. At that point, I'll be free of licensing worries and will probably send a few plans to the forum.
I'll probably be an infrequent poster, but I'll be here for the long haul. I'm glad to see this forum is healthy after eight years and I hope it lasts until we're all wise old folks with a hundred model planes each.
