Hello, I am addicted to foam board.

Hello fellow foamers.

So there I was. In my living room minding my own business on the YouTube. Somehow a FliteTest video popped up in my "recommended" list. I clicked, as one mindlessly does once they have gone down the YouTube rabbit hole. The episode was FT Mighty Mini Arrow - DIY Race Wing. As the episode progresses less and less of my butt was on my seat. By the end of the episode I was barely on the edge. I looked over at my wife. She said "You have to build one of those now, don't you.". The smile that crept onto my face must have been all the answer she needed.

From the FliteTest site I downloaded and printed the free plans. FREE! Investment so far zero dollars. We jumped in the car and headed to Walmart where I bought 5 sheets of foam core board for $.88 a sheet. And a roll of quality packing tape. Lets call the total investment $10 so far. Onward!

AC Moore, "Wife, to the hot glue guns please.". I purchased a high temp glue gun that uses the larger diameter sticks and a pack of glue sticks. I don't remember exact pricing but under $20.

We have at home already a cutting mat, razor knives, metal rulers, etc. so no more money needed to be spent. There I was, maybe two hours later, cutting out my very first RC airplane! $30 dollars.

I will fast forward now, risking boring my new brothers and sisters in foam. A power pack from FliteTest, a used DX6i, some batteries and receiver and various bits and pieces from Hobby Town and my kit is growing weekly.

In the hanger is a FT Arrow and an FT Tiny Trainer. I flew the Tiny Trainer today for the first time, for the plane and for me, ever. I might have 30 seconds air time under my belt at the moment, but I am HOOKED. Looking to get a simulator for learning and playing at night.

Anyway, Hi guys!

Nice! Welcome to the hobby!

FYI, it sounds like you have found the coveted ROSS foam Board. You can read more about it here: http://flitetest.com/articles/ross-foam-board
Most people don't have access to this foam board and use Adams foam board from the Dollar Tree stores.

This forum has some awesome people who are super helpful. So don't be afraid to ask for help.

Hi Nugget. Welcome to the club! It is just too much fun.
With regard to foam board from Wal-Mart. I hope you were able to find the ROSS brand? They typically stock mostly Elmer's which is too heavy. Flite Test kits and most builders use foam board from Dollar Tree stores. It is very lite like Ross. I like Ross the best but it is harder to find than Dollar Tree. Not all Wal-marts stock Ross.

Hello nwnugget, welcome to this crazy family! Reading your RC "origin" story kind of reminded me of how I got started almost 3 years ago now. Flite Test got me into this hobby too, and now there is no turning back. :)

Looking forward to reading more posts from you.

HUSH! I am trying to get the control throws on my FT Flyer just right! The zip-ties don't seem to do a great job of preventing pushrod flex. Must...find...videos.... :)

I don't know if it is Ross or Adams but I know it is not Elmers. That stuff was more money and felt heavier. At the time I thought the Elmers might be better. Good thing I was feeling cheap!

Flew a bit more a minute ago. Probably have a minute under my belt now. One broken prop.

Try taping bar-b-q skewers to the push rods. I've found that that works quite well and it's pretty cheap.

Thank you

I have been looking for a solution to this for a while it's hard to find thin steal rod's aside from going to the hobby store and im to cheap for that. this will surly help stiffen the flimsy wire i found a walmart.

The more props you break the more fun you have!

If you want to fly longer you need to go higher. At least then you have the time it takes to fall out of the sky...

The FT guys call it going "Two mistakes high"...

Welcome to the boards and to foam. I too am addicted to foam. I sometimes find myself stopping at Dollar Tree just to see how good their current stock looks (often times it's a little warped).

I'm off to Walmart now to clean them out of board. Printed the Versawing and FT-22 plans. Gonna need the supplies... one day.

Nice job! I keep checking my local stores but they all seem to carry the Elmers.

I DID find a pack of 10 Ad-Tech glue sticks (next to a pack of 25) that look like the ones the FT crew uses. Only got the smaller pack to test them out in my Pro100. Running low on Extreme Packing Tape....uh oh.

I replenished my prop supply and built a new powerpod (the first took a beating). I managed to fly and gently crash my way through an entire battery without breaking one of the new props.

Progress!
