Hello there.
I am still using RC desk pilot. ( !!!! ) I love SketchUp and the work flow from idea to flight. It's cool.
So I can make models and export .X files and put them together in RCDP editor and then fly them. No issue there.
BUT ...
The stage where you make the surface which you paint on later ( it's an image file applied in RCDP ) has me baffled.
I am not even sure what it's called. ( Some people over in RCgroups have told me about UV mapping in your 3D model
software but they are applying the paint work in there and exporting the model with paint on... which is not what I have been
talking about. )
Some one knows how to do this as I have seen FT models in RCDP that fuse the scheme ( a .X file and a .PNG file ) .
RCDP is old, so is SketchUp 2016 but they together are super easy and cool to make things with. I made a non flying thing
that works in RCDP and it really made me quite proud. Lemme find a pic.... * rifling through .jpg sounds *
( The fully functioning and flying flight controller. it has a twist grip yaw axis. Flies quite well...)
The skin on the model was done in SketchUp and is baked on, as apposed to the .png file way which gets put on in RCDP.
looking through the Aeronca Champ files I found the .png file that is used to create the paint work. How this file is made in
SketchUp is the nut of the problem. They even put the .SKP file in model folder. So I can see the result of the model makers work.
Too cool.
So yeah. Hmm....
I saw the new version of RCDP but am a bit sad that it's for some niche VR headset contraption rather than , well, a more accessible platform.
There was an inward groan when I realised I was not able to use it. But RCDP original still works. yey.
sorry I talk a lot.
My fave plane in RC DP is the Radian Pro. and the Tiger Heli. ( I am trying to to put paint on the Tiger but it's tricky as...)
oh well, ahem. I worked out that the Tiger png is a profile diagram, so I found one similar and fiddled it till it fits on and
well, it mostly works. but it was really quite a lot of work.

So what do I ultimately want to do:
Paint my models that I make in SketchUp, using the image file method with model file method.
( The part missing is the model to image steps....)
Weather here is raining but it is not windy at all. When it stops raining it is perfect condtions for flying.
My latest RC flying has been my 5% glue eflite UMX pits speicial....
Why am I posting on FliteTest ?
Because people here were using SketchUp and RCDP to make models
and they knewed the magic to do the artwork thing.
Thanks for listeing to my lengthy diatribe. * raining even harder sounds *
