How are you storing your batteries? I need some peace of mind...

Rapid charging lipos is dangerous, rapid charge nicads is more dangerous............
Only thing dangerous with a nicad is it's toxicity from the Cadmium. Back in the 1980s it was very common to fast charge a nicads from empty to full in 5 minutes. They would be almost be too hot to handle. I don't remember killing any of them.
For lipos I wouldn't charge any higher than 1C.

If the insulation on the wires wasn't melting, you weren't pushing enough wattage. They pop like popcorn. Or at least in the 12 C cell partinavia twin when I first tried electric maybe 1985. Never got to fly that one

I believe the lipo danger is overblown hype, and that’s a good thing to help protect people from the very small danger of charging inappropriately, or continuing to use a damaged battery.
I’m not trying to minimalize it, but I don’t think you have to be lucky never to have had a problem.
Like anything in life, reasonable caution is the watchword
I agree this was especially true a few years back when fpv drones starting to become main stream and started to get popular. A lot of people back then talked about lipos (and treated them) like they were bombs that were waiting to go off any second without warning and burn ur house down. (which isn't completely wrong but an extreme exaggeration) im also quite surprised at how good of a reputation lithium ion batteries have especially since there were hundreds of hoverboards with lithium ions that caught on fire randomly while charging back in 2015-2017 yet they dont have half the bad rep that lipos have.

I have a few Li-Ion packs and have severely abused a couple. They tend to have lower current output than Li-Po which helps keep them from self igniting when pushing hard past the C rating but not shorting them out. They tend to be current limited without sagging much. I have 2 18650 4S 3200mah packs that I have flown my spiders on a 3" protected prop quad in FliteFest Combat up till they just wouldn't go any longer. They max out around 25A so no super powerfull punchouts, but they also didn't brownout. They were toasty afterwards. 🔥 🥵. I also use them in my Volantex Phoenix2400 powered glider and have not seen a noticable drop in capacity or flight time after "abusing" them.

Some of the newer 21700 based packs are pushing 40-50Amps a cell now. I have a few ready to go but am not planning to abuse them quite yet. Want them for endurance flying my larger FPV flyers and will run them 2P to get 10000mah at 80-100A. Will be less likely to overtax them that way.

Should have taken a picture of my 3S 5500 with one layer peeled back at a 45 degree bend. One heck of a lawn digging hole. Bent it back to flat, whacked it with a rubber mallet, expected Armageddon, but it refused by staying a regular lipo battery. Not even reduced capacity. Not sure what to think after thinking long and hard about it.

Dont recommend this at home ( see line number 2 in the after commemt section below about stupid), professionals only under controlled conditions in boom* and fire proof locations with 25lb dry chemical fire extinguishers in abundance.

*worked once in a reinforced concrete bomb resistant structure that had chain links holding the roof on loosely. (Had to jack the roof back into place after big storms) Who knew the Maple street roldgold pretzel factory was explosive?
