How to make FT style plans?

People who have made their own designs before, How hard is it to design a plane? What do you need to have for the plane to fly? Do you just need a big enough wing, good power, and a good cg? Or is it more complicated than that?
I can't say (yet) that I've done a completely original plane I have modified some enough to call them original. With conventional wing and tail feathers most things will fly with enough power and get the CG right. A lot of what I fly uses KFM wing foils that work vary well and are easy to make.

Whats a kfm foil?

I think i’ve got my basic plane planned out!
Power pack: a
Prop: 6x4.5b
Wingspan: 32in (812 mm)
Length: 20.5in (64% of wingspan which is scale, 520mm)
Weight w/everything: prob in 280-300 zone
Airfoil: kfm2

I’m currently away from home, but i can start designing in a few days!

Is this the type of airfoil all ft planes use?
No. They use a number of different wing builds. Some "Flat Plate" Some "Bent Plate" but most are a multi-bend and fold to an airfoil. Below are some examples.

A Flat plate wing is usually a single piece of Foam board that is Flat. The F22 is this type.
A Bent Plate is a single or so bend that has no bottom plate under the wing. The Mini Scout has a single bend in to a slight V.
An Airfoil wing has a varying number of bends, usually on top and a plate or bent piece under the wing. The Mini Tutor is this style.

The KFm (Kline-Fogelman) wing has a primary Flat plate with any number of other flat plates added top or bottom to form an easy to build airfoil. This is denoted by KFm then a number. There is a chart to show how these are designated. See below.

I am sure someone has more scientific names for these types of "Airfoils"

As far as design software, you will need to find something you like working with. I stick with free versions of stuff. Sketchup, F360, and double cad.

The whole process to go from a design to shareable plans in PDF could require a couple different programs as you export one format and convert. CutePDF Writer is the program i use to make PDF's from my plans in Sketchup Make17.

One suggestion for your first plane is to download a plan near the size you are looking for. Then adapt the wing to use for your plane. As you get the hang of it you will be able to design your own wing.

There is nothing really wrong about a KFm style wing. They do tend to have higher drag than a conventional airfoil wing. There are some other things too. Read the article here in Flite test and there is another in RCGroups.

I really want to make plans for an at502 but I dont know what software people use to make ft-style plans. can someone tell me what software to use, or if they know of some air tractor plans?
I as well as many others use fusion360. I do this for both 3D designs and for converting existing plans to laser or cnc router.
I use mesh maker to unfold the 3D shapes to 2D parts. Then I use inkscape to do the final layout for the 20x30 pages.
