My motto is "I design things that don't exist". Hence, I just use paper and cut and paste and work on the many problems that exist. It is complicated as you said. You must look at airflows, structural and forces that act, react on your design. I do a lot of "white paper" research and experiments.People who have made their own designs before, How hard is it to design a plane? What do you need to have for the plane to fly? Do you just need a big enough wing, good power, and a good cg? Or is it more complicated than that?
For instance, very little is done with EDF's. Lot's of problems have to be solved and it is getting worse with the new upcoming NYGAD fighters. So you need to keep abreast of what is happening. 3D printers are now helping to solve some of the problems in design work. Some fly, others not. So it is more complicated than that.
