Wilsonman, great job on the rubric, but what if the aircraft we are building does not normally have an airfoiled tail? Will that apply the same way that aircraft without retracts/weapons will?

You get off easy ;) What can I say? It pays to do your homework sometimes!

Blue, Pink Green...can't find any of them at my local hardware stores :( All they've got is the heavy yellow crumbly stuff with aluminum on the outside and the white Styrofoam. I've seen a very thin flexible blue foam but it comes in rolls not sheets and isn't really suitable for building. I guess the stuff people use for building planes just isn't used for insulating houses here in the desert.
That is exactly right. You are in the wrong climate for it :(

What? Rivets? Who DOES that?!? ;)

After reviewing the rubric I feel totally unqualified. But, that's not going to stop me!

Crazy people like me do rivets. I've already told you how fun all 400+ pins were in the SE5a. :)

The idea is not to intimidate you. The idea is to get an outside opinion of your work once completed. The build-off is to motivate you to get something done to the best ability.

I would STRONGLY suggest that no entrant review the rubric. This is really just to have fun. No "first places" really but rank will be assigned per the rubric. BUILD for FUN people! That is really what I'm trying to foster. Its building season. USE IT!

I certainly recall that conversation. You had this twinkle in your eye. It was very much like that excitement you had when you explained how to make rivets from drops of glue and a pin last Friday. You, sir, are a perfectionist of a most impressive order!

Jhitsma, Outerzone has a plans set for a 6/6a under the seaplanes category. There are floats on the plans, but it could be easily converted. I know the 6 isn't quite a 7, but they do look pretty similar, so if one was ambitious enough they might be able to get creative and end up with an RV-7/7A

Hmm...the RV-6 was actually the plane that first made me aware of Vans, and the 7 is mostly an updated version. But the wing on that Outerzone RV-6 just looks wrong to me...Maybe it's just the photo on the listing but it doesn't look as "sexy" as the real thing. The RV-3 plans do look pretty sharp.

And the reason I'd like to a 3 or 7 is they're the two I'd love to build "for real" some day ;) (Not that there's much chance of it ever actually happening at this rate.)

One more vote for the 3...I wondered why it looked familiar when I did that search earlier. Turns out I actually printed the plans out almost a year ago when I was testing my large format printer :D

However I'm not sure I have the room to actually build it...and I'd rather so something more of a stringer and fabric design than sheeted like this. But man...it is sexy looking and I do have the plans sitting here.

I really am in the wrong climate - not just for foam availability...but it's also flying season for me not build season :D

Still...it is nice being able to build without the A/C and fans blowing things around and the dining room where I have my "build bench" setup is a lot more comfortable this time of year ;)

Not with that attitude you won't. Sorry, just coming from a long time EAAer. (I haven't built anything either, so take it worth a grain of sand)

So, I think this will move forward. I have the poll open for a week but we have already had some good enthusiasm and feedback.

The LAST part of this will be to find a panel of adjudicators. I would like to keep this anonymous so please PM me if you are interested. I'm not looking for any particular qualifications. I am more or less interested in making this a "community choice" style adjudication. I would like to have at least 5 members of the panel. PM me your interest along with your email for contact. A real name would be nice if I do not already know you. Lastly, to be clear, entrants may NOT be a member of the panel. If you have read this entire thread you will have a fair idea of what is expected of you. We are currently sitting at nearly 20 participants and I expect more to come by the beginning of April.

I'm not ruling it out...but at this point it's not looking good. Too many smaller projects I can't finish because I don't have a garage anymore. And with the market nosediving right after buying our house (at what we thought was already the bottom of the market) I won't be getting a garage anytime soon (big lot, but due to how it's laid out there's no where I could even build a garage and actually have access to it.)

Then there's the whole getting pilots license issue - something I've been wanting to do for over 20 years...but just can't pull it off financially. Was hoping to be debt free in about two years...but that's looking less and less likely thanks to our new "affordable" health insurance (that costs twice as much, has a higher deductible, covers less, and pays less on what it does cover.) At this rate by the time I can actually afford to start taking flying lessons I'll be old enough the medical cert will be an issue :(

I haven't given up hope...just being realistic and living with what I can for now ;)

A balsa RV-3 with a FPV setup is probably as close as I'll get for the next 15-20 years so I may as well start building that :D

Since the rules say an already started build is fine...and I got approval* from the wife....

Just wondering. Which forum is preferred for build threads :D

Note - those ribs are still oversized and the notches are undersized. Since all the ribs on this wing are identical once I have them all cut I'll stack and bolt them then sand to final contour together as well as cutting the final notches all together.

Was going to start on the fuselage first...but discovered I had less 1/8" balsa than I thought. Plenty of 1/16" though so the wing comes first I guess :)

Growing up I always built from die cut kits (pre laser days). My last balsa build was print wood. But this is my first time going 100% from plans. Also my first time doing an electric conversion. (not that I ever did gas before - so far all my balsa builds have been rubber powered or gliders and all but the last were free flight.) I'm also usually more interested in just making something that flies rather than making it look good. So this is a big chunk for me to bite off here...but...that's what makes things fun right :D

* - Though it was one of those grudging "I know I can't stop you" approvals. She actually said "The only thing that worries me is I know you're going to be consumed by this and all obsessive over it until it's done in 3 weeks". I felt bad telling her I was expecting to be more like 3-4 months as I want to take my time and do it right. Heck I don't think I'll have the funds for a motor and ESC for at least 5 weeks :D

I'll start the official build off this week. Feel free to re-label your thread per the first post. Does not matter which sub forum. Once the main build-off thread is established I'll post a link there for your build thread.

Quick question: would a scale heli build be permitted? I only ask because in your first post it specified Airplane

I hope so. The rules mostly say that it has to look like a real aircraft and have at least one electric motor. A heli fits that criteria.

I suppose it would. It would fit the criteria. Still... controlled flight... that is a harder one to judge with helis :p

Mmmmmmm, balsa.

Before I throw my hat into the ring, does a profile-style build fit into the contest rules, assuming it is based on an actual production plane?

Well dang... clearly I've been out of the loop the last week. I am in! I have several designs in mind for submission. We shall see which one i Pick. Definitely thinking a British Warbird :)
