The transmitter physically feels great. I've not done a range check on it nor even bound it yet. I do have one plane set up on it. If you're looking for a plug n fly, don't think about it much transmitter, this ain't it. However, the plane I've got on it is a flying wing. I've found the templates on the transmitter, plugged it in and my flight surfaces are controlled. I need to assign the throttle kill switch to my spring switch. This is another thing, none of these pysical switches on the transmitter or linked to anything. You need to pick what switch does what. Dual rates, landing gear, throttle cut, soundtrack, etc.
Soundtraack? Oh yea, you can load a music file to your card, flip a switch and it will play music to you. But heck, with the telemetry you can assign values to make Logical switches, of which there are 32 or 64, i'm blurry this morning, and you can have those switches make the transmitter tell you things. "Low fuel, low battery, ailerons in 3d mode, I'm going too fast".
Huh? There are a bunch of pre-recorded messages on the box AND a bunch of little 64x32 images of planes, and a Splash image or two, all of which are open memory and can be added too or taken away.
So,,,, if I do this correctly I can turn on my box, it will power up, with Open TX on the screen for a couple seconds while it loads the Eprom. Then it would say Welcome Mr.Clean and display a splash screen of the MrClean emblem. Then it should come up with the model memory I last used, displaying a picture of my model with the model name in the upper right corner and the conditions of the switches I've activated telling me Ailerons at bl rate, Elevator at bl rates, throttle closed, audibly giving you the rundown. 8 switches, 32 or 64 logical switches, all the mixes, control smoothing by assigning and modifying the curves to your control inputs (how slick will that be to hook up your gasser and have the throttle response be linear to the stick position?) all of them programable, mixable, screw up-able for 60 planes.
Most likely, I'll use the 6 channel template and never use the rest of it, so it's overkill. But I've got this high powered computer that I'm typing on that will do my taxes, print or read books, let me type masterpieces or play space invaders or watch and edit movies of my own or others, control the house lights and all, yet all I do with it is answer emails, talk on billboards (forums) and watch porn.
So far I'm digging it though its a kind of like a new cell phone. I need to learn how to use a big chunk of the stuff even though I'll normally just use a 25 buck transmitters worth of flight controls and I'm real close to just flying control line and not even worry about electronics. I fly FF but I don't build that good.
It's amazing and daunting BUT the box feels good, like my 8103 with flippers on the side of it. Nice weight and size. The sticks are a little short but those can be swapped out.
Now, I think I've had an embulism pop in my head thinking about this stuff, I'm going back to bed and let the room stop spinning. Anyone who has grown up knowing the number of buttons on a game station consoles controller and what they do will have no problem with this. I knew the 3 settings and dial of Pong, its gonna take a bit.

Sounds like a great TX to me! Don't think I want it playing music at me, but whatever floats folks boats. If I was looking for a new TX today, I think it would be this one.

I've been using the FrSky module in my 8103 for a couple years now and it's solid. I fly my 52cc powered SPAD USS with it, a pretty big plane that I've gotten too far out. But I was replacing my radios because this 8103dt was my newest one and I purchased it the year they came out. The other two I had were older by a couple years. Shoot, they were getting old in the tooth but have been reliable radios. Here's a cut above the 8103 in channel count and capability along with the FrSky 2.4 modulation and it's quite a bit cheaper then my 8103's were when I bought them. I have a Specktrum Dx8 that I bought last year and it was more powerful then my 8103's but it's nothing compared to this.
I had a little time today to play. I've got my radio configured right now so that it doens't error on switch placement for this model when it comes up AND it tells me that the throttle stick is either engine on or engine off. The plane is handlaunch, had to assign a switch for engine cutoff. It will repeat Engine off every 5 seconds so I don't spend time wondeirng why the throttle doesn't do anything. I've also got the eprom memory downloaded to my computer and can fiddle with it there and bring up the transmitter simulation software to see what does what. I guess it's the same software that you use to play with 9x and 9xr's so thats a bonus for anyone using those transmitters if they want to go to this transmitter with what Bruce(xjet) calls flipper thingys on the side of the transmitter.
The software is called companion9x and if you type that in google you can download it (freeware) and play with it, see if it's something you're interested in. If you have a 9xr or a modified 9x you can work with the eproms on those as well.
Far cry from the Kraft made Tower hobbies 6 channel I started with back in 78. Man, I was big time back then. Only cost me most of my savings after a summer of picking the driving range at Topeka Country club.
I had a little time today to play. I remember Kraft! My dad had one that I had my first flights on. If I remember correctly, it was a 6 channel because he flew full house 3m competition gliders with it. He also had a smaller 2m which is what he'd let me fly. Anyway, back to topic...
I have a 9X that I've modded the heck out of with all the goodies, including Frsky DJT module, but this Taranis is still very tempting. I really like the "flipper thingys"(thanks Bruce!) and the fact that the switches aren't assigned, just like the 9X. The open software is a big bonus too. Damn, one more item for the WTB list...

Alright, I have my plane all the way set up. Now what I need to do is go through the online guide and actually do one from scratch instead of banging about till it works right though I think I've been back and forth enough to do what I've done correctly. Setting throttle limits and cutout was interesting. Setting dual rates as well, but it's all there in the book how to do it and once you bump around in the logics a bit you know where it is.
For example. I took one of the two position switches and assigned it to when it was in the closed value it would move the throttle channel to 100%. I took the next switch position on the menu to say that when that switch was in the off position it tells me that the throttle is off. I have one mix that says when its in the on position it will tell me that the throttle is on. Really not necessary but I'm learning those switches.
To set the throttle up right, or any channel, go to the sticks menu, tab to the stick you want and edit that line. With the servo unhooked move the stick to centered and hook the servo up at 90 degrees to travel. Now adjust the weight of the channel to give you the desired throw. Add Exponential why don'tcha. You can assign a flight mode to this setting so when you hit a custom switch setting this control will activate (that's two levels of flight control in). The next setting is switch and thats where you assign which control on the box would setup your dual rates. I picked the appropriate switch and direction set. With those values changed you exit back to the sticks menu. THEN you can insert a line under or over the line you just altered. This will copy the line and give you the same screen. Here for dual rates you'd change the switch line to where you'd want the optional rate. For mine I chose the center position of the switch and gave the weight a value of 60. Setting the dual rates for each channel like that and going back to the main menu you can hit the switches and watch the elevator increase/decrease from 100 to 60 percent, ailerons. My throttle is set to go to an idle position to full throttle or with the flip of the switch, dead. (in Fox engine terminology that's run and land).
That's a bit more then the normal radio setup but now you can set your rates setting on differnent switchs if you want. And if when you put on full flaps you need to add a touch of elevator up trim AND decrease the effectiveness of the elevator travel in direct relationship to the throttle setting, you could set those conditions up in the switches and modes menus and make it all automatic, I think. No, I'm pretty sure.
I've not configured to read/write the Flash memory yet. But I'm going to go through the manual and setup a plane that way, see if I can pass that test first. Sides, before I use custom tones and messages on my radio I've got to figure out how to make this pc of mine running windows 8 actually record a wav file and edit it. I took one off my phone and the darn thing is in an invalid format. You'd figure a new version of windows would speak in all the available formats AND you'd be wrong. Dang proprietary stuff! But with any luck I'll get to go fly this plane this week sometime.

Hey, there are a bunch of files in the memory once you plug the USB in including the manual, links to the Openrcforums pages plus all the pics, sounds and wavs. I changed the tada.wav file from Welcome to Taranis to Welcome Mr. Clean. Now to bump around and see about that splash screen. I think I still have to do a FLASH memory for that, but after fixing a car emergency for my daughter I've gotten in to play RC late, so its' off to the showers first. More and more an awesome deal.

I should be ok. I already fly with the ER9X on my 9x with a frsky module. From what I understand, it's almost the same software in practice. But I can take 16 channels to 24 by adding my current module to the Taranis (I need to figure out what I can use 24 channels for! 
) and use the 9x for Spektrum BnF planes with an Orange module. That's what I'm thinking anyway...

Thinking about the orange module myself. I flew all weekend with the Taranis. Actually, I sat in the grass and punched buttons a whole bunch but I had three airplanes on it and each one needed set up correctly, one of which was a new rebuild. Would have been smart to mark down control throws with the old transmitter and match them with the new, but nobody ever said I was smart.
My first plane was my SPAD USS and what bothered me right off was that my throttle curve wasn't curving. Then I found that I had the throttle reversed in several places canceling out the reversing but reversing my curve. That was weird. I straighted that mess out then applied a 5 point curve to the throttle servo. Now half throttle on my gasser is half throttle. 1/4 is 1/4 an 3/4 is 3/4. Not that I don't do most of the flying at full and land. I also set the flaps up to go down slowly and to apply elevator down along with the slow motion. That's pretty neat now I transition from full speed to slow speed and full flaps without any popup, really cool. And my bomb drop works fine, fact is plenty of bomb drops would work fine if I configured it right.
Another cool thing is when you bring up the model memory one of those settings is internal or external RF. So you can plug your Orange in and either use it or the internal FrSky without unplugging all the time. I don't know if the Orange module uses the internal antenae. I don't fancy having an external banging around back there. But I'm really happy with what I have so far.

Reprogramming from scratch all the time is never a bad idea if you can do it. It helps with keeping you current and conversant with the process and really helps when you need to fix something quickly. One of the things I learned with the DSLR's...
I had read that you can use either/or on the internal and external bay and also that it was programmable to the model memory. You can also lock the model memory to a specific Rx so you can be sure of never flying that model with the wrong setup. The more I read, the more I love it, and I don't even have one yet! Still waiting for the stock to arrive...

The 9X should run it with no problem, be aware though. The Taranis has a much more grunty processor so I'm not sure if the smaller processor of the 9X will be bogged down any with all the extras enabled. It's a 32 bit in the Taranis and only an 8 bit in the 9X...
