With a home brew quad, how do people locate the battery in the same place, as this must affect the trim?

The flight controller takes care of that. That's why quads can even fly with mismatched props and/or motors. It's not a good idea, but it works (within reason). It's a good idea to get the battery somewhere close to the center just for flight characteristic reasons, but the flight controller will take it from there.

Actually strategic pack placement can enhance performance depending on the task. Its good to have it centered though for normal flying or learning.
