This is not foamboard, this is foam specially designed for aircraft modeling in Russia. Lightweight, easy to process, bends easily and does not break

In addition, the wings and fuselage are covered with 3 mm foam, ribs and frames 5 mm. Therefore, adhesive tape is necessary for strength

@Whit Armstrong - great looking plane and it looks like you really put a lot of effort into the plans and construction. Congratulations!. Personally, and its a personal problem, I have a hard time building a German plane. But after looking around I think I will eventually build this (and no, not the Spitfire):

Nice. I think the modifications to use the junkers engine wouldn't be too hard. The nose is circular at the very end to accommodate the spinner, so it wouldn't be difficult to create the flat bit. Or maybe you could 3d print something?

Done with the fuselage. The gap on the tail skins is pretty atrocious, but that's nothing that can't be fixed. It's mainly because I inserted the backbones 5mm forwards of where they should be, so everything back there is off by 5mm. It wasn't hard to correct for this issue though, and it didn't have any effect on the real structure of the plane.

The hatch fits really tight, but will be loosened with sanding. I rebuilt the entire nose after I discovered an error in the plans that was keeping everything out of alignment, so now everything looks much better and goes together straighter.

It also fits well with the wing.

@Whit Armstrong - I think you've got the better idea with the spine - that's what John uses now. The box in back doesn't work that well.[/QUOTE]

With my less than stellar flying skills the spine method hasn't held up to rough landings. I'm more concerned with the front - a rough landing in the corsair ripped cowl clean off 😆 🤣 I've had quite a few heavy landings (even cartwheels!) with my @Niez13 hellcat and fw190 as well as my 109 and p36 all with not much more than some wrinkles in the end of a wing! The box in the back has worked out very well in my design, but I fully respect the spine method for a lighter airframe (I actually have since added quite a bit of weight to the spar of my corsair! )

Yeah, the tail generally doesn't need much strength, but there are definitely some scenarios in which it would be beneficial (in fact I'm working on a design right now using the box method. I know what you mean about the front -- I think @MiniacRC has the right idea with the removable front on his mini p-47, but that's hard to integrate with a hatch. Anyway, hopefully someday someone'll come up with something to solve the problem.

I must say that you have a great design. Its funny that I started mine and never realized you had started yours as well. Either way it was fun to just give it a go. I'm always trying to overdo things... like worrying about airflow, trying to be proto-accurate, whatever. I'm my worst critic. I love that you did yours all in cad and then patterned from there. I've done a fair share of cad but for whatever reason I've been designing the planes in 2D and manual for getting the skins right! Funny too that JO had a 109 in development at the time that both of ours came out😆 🤣

Finally another update! I actually finished this one a week ago, but just neglected to post about it until now.

Photo on 11-17-22 at 9.11 PM.jpg

the fuselage is fitting well on the wings, note that it isn't glued on yet. The tail is a tricky build; I screwed up 3 times making it before finally getting it right. The good news is that this construction makes is durable and sturdy. The "t" tail design had me worried in the beginning, but I think things worked out.

I've also finished the cockpit, and redesigned it. No pictures now, but they're coming soon.

I like the multi-layer folded vstab - I did something like that on my P36 and it turned out beautifully. Although i kinda went to heck with the joke and sanded it out to a nice tapered profile in the back :ROFLMAO: I can't wait to see how your cockpit turns out - I had plans to do a clear canopy on my second build - it's now almost 2 years later since I started it and it hasn't budged since FF21! (still have the framing waiting to get sandwiched in the laminator )

Yeah, I should probably have sanded it, but I just wanted to get everything done. I've been thinking about doing a clear framed canopy too, but I just wanted to get everything finished for the first prototype.

oh wow I thought this was a second or later build!? Looking great for the first build. I hear ya on wanting to get it done - my first build still sports a dtfb canopy that's looks just a tiny bit too big :ROFLMAO:

I have made some improvements to the parts as I've gone along. What you don't see are the two other tail pieces, extra nose, multiple control surfaces, etc. that I botched. It's the ~2nd iteration of about every part.

yea I have built wings multiple times and the skins are manual so I make like 5 or more of each one sometimes! so in actuality you've built two of them 😆
