Master Series Style Spirit Se-1 (60")

This is a project I've been working on for a few days modeled after the Spirit Se-1 which was revealed at Oshkosh a few years ago. Its a cool looking plane and I thought it would go great with my Ercoupe. It should be about 60" and will use the ft PP XL w/ a 12in prop. Not sure about too much else yet but I'm hoping to replicate the folding wings and have some nice suspended gear. I'll attach some pictures of the Cad I have done so far. Hope you guys like it

I did some more work on it this morning. Fuselage is mostly done, and wings are much further along now. Not so sure now If I Want to make the wings fold or just come out bc the folding is pretty complex and I'm worried it would have strength and rigidity issues but we'll see. I'll probably start working on the gear next so I can get an idea of what it will look like. Let me know what you think

Looks great! How did you find the former outlines? Also, not that you asked, but if it were mine, I might reduce the size of the holes in the rear spart thing.

How do you do the wings/how did you learn onshape? Are there any resources you would recommend? I know that Flying Ace RC on youtube did a series, do you know of any others?

Not that I know of (which is why I made that series in the first place). I used this series when I was first starting out, and it helped me build some fundamentals. (I didn’t follow it step by step, but more of used it as a base, and made my own style). Thanks to @Whit Armstrong for making it.

I mostly self taught myself, but I had my brother to help me when I had a question about hw Onshape works or how to do something. Honestly the best advice I could give is to just design a few planes without intending to build them first to get used to how things work. I probably designed 5ish planes that were terrible and never got made but helped me learn a lot. As for the formers, there were n outlines, but I usually dont use them anyways as i find you end up having to tweak them so much anyway to make things look right that they aren't very useful. So I just eyeball the shape of the fuselage or if there are diagrams of the formers I'll kinda copy the basic shape. Hope this helps and I'll think about shrinking the rear holes but on many of my other planes I haven't used a rear spline at all and they've been fine. I really only used it bc this is a tailwheel and I wanted it to be a little stronger. I'll attach a picture of one of my other planes' wings so you can see hw they work

I know most people don't do ribbed wings, but they make the build more fun, and Ive been traumatized too many times by either a crease forming along the spar or the panel getting creased when you handle it. Also here is a larger ribbed wing (this one hasn't been built yet tho so maybe it wont work)

Also if you have Onshape you can see any of my or anybody's designs idk if you knew that

Like 3 views? @Bearcat, How long did it take to achieve the proficiency where you could do the spars ect in the B-29? (which, BTW looks super slick!!!)

Sorry for all the noob questions BTW...

As for the formers, if you look at a plane you kinda realize they're pretty simple usually, the bearcat has alot of circles and like one pear shaped former which is another common shape. As for the spars ect. I didn't start doing complex wings like that until my 5th or 6th plane but that was more bc I didn't think of it until then I'm sure with some time you could figure it out. I show one of my first ones so you can see how its usually done

Here is another progress update on the Spirit:

I got most of the airframe done now but I still need to do some finishing touches and the hatch, finish the gear, and the removable wings latching and spars ect. I am hoping to finish Cad today and start laying it out in inkscape

Progress Update:

Gear pod shape has been finalized, now I need to start designing the suspension and struts

Cleaned up center of wing

Added hatch and modified the shape of the front a bit

You can't see much of a difference in the picture but idk i had to put something. Lmk if you have a idea for the detachable wings ight now I am planning on using the same method as the ercoupe but i didn't love it.

Maybe look up how eflite did it with their Ultimate 3d (I have one) It's a decent mechanism, and very simple. Though eflite made theirs a bit too weak in my opinion. Or maybe it's just because of how rough I treat it in the air... 😂

Been working on the suspension before I start the wing attaching thing. Not sure yet how I'm going to do it I was originally going to use O-rings as rubber bands bc they are easy to get and what I have on hand but I dont know that I can fit them inside very well so we'll see maybe I'll use some rc car shocks. Lmk what you think

Happy to say the design is done. I expect to have to modify some parts but for the most part it should be complete. I am very happy with how this one turned out and I'm excited to get cutting and building. final part count ended up being 71. I am planning on running the ppxl or similar on a 12" prop. Please ask questions and lmk what you think:)
