McDonnell XP-67 "Moonbat"

In 1940, the U.S. Army Air Corps issued Request for Proposal R-40C, requesting designs for a high-speed, long-range, high-altitude interceptor intended to destroy enemy bombers. The specifications were very bold, encouraging manufacturers to produce radical aircraft that would outperform any existing fighter in the world at the time.
Blended wing-body visionary James McDonnell sculpted the XP-67 in the early 1940s, it was a spectacular-looking single-seat twin, the only piston-engine airplane that McDonnell Aircraft ever produced. The company completed just one XP-67 before jets left props in the dust and the Army cancelled the program in 1944.

It was futuristic complex shaped design nonetheless. with the concept of making other airplane structures besides the wings into lifting surfaces. a blended-wing design. From the conventional tail forward, the Moonbat was all curves.
The Continental motors mounted, was drastically underpowered. When McDonnell agitated for another motortype, thetime came for Army to shut down the project.

Its complex shape intruges me, and been on my "perhaps wanna build" - list for longer time. To do this by foamboard, make need of creativity!

start on the internals:
The two "main" widest formers are done in lightweight "plastic"-material (still dont know the exact name on it) for rigidity, and main one will also be supported by cf tube from nacelle pods out on wing.

shape on fuselage skins top/bottom begins come on... even if taped to keep it in place for glue to dry yet.. :)

How making the skins? I make it in paperboard, give it gentle sizing, cut foamboard parts, and rework individually foamboard parts to fit.
Extra work perhaps, and give a bit slow building, but only way, when dont have any plans on the parts.

No U didn't. Yeah U did. I have had my eye on this idea for quite some time. I am impressed with what U have done so far. I have a feeling the HO 229 is somewhere on the horizon in your list of projects.

- you know.... the HO 229 i belive would be easier make, its not as much complex curbed shapes as on the Moonbat. The HO IX should be nice with a dual EDF setup though ;)

I have down loaded many drawings and info on both as I have those two on my some day list. I agree with U that the HO would not as complex. Right now I am just trying to get this Seamaster done before the end of summer.

that seamaster will be nice to see ready :) ive changed it to another buildlist it was on, when you started :D

the canopy/ battery hatch is ready. (looks high in this angle, but is correct scale..) A "lip" under skin in front, and magnets at rear. Pilot is in order, the ones i had didnt fit here.
Ive ordered some spinners... but now found another angle at cowl would look nicer, and even seems as the original one. Then needed order other 5mm less in diameter spinners :rolleyes:..
