Mini Corsair Decals & Paint Colors

All,

Just ordered a Flite Test Mighty Mini Corsair 609mm plane to build. Can someone recommend a decal kit, and maybe even some paint color information? I have seen the youtube posts about painting foam board, which are a huge help. Just not sure how to get decals and select reasonably close looking paint colors. I know it's a throwaway trainer, but my end game is to build a balsa kit corsair from scratch and so finishing practice is something I'm striving to increase my skills on.

For practice I'm learning on a HobbyZone sport cub s with SAFE. I live in Bend, Oregon and it's ALWAYS windy here, but this thing is so easy to fly that I've got 2+ hours of flight time and 3 crashes (two ground, one tree.)

I just finished my Master Series Corsair and I used Navy Blue
(https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ol...Gloss-Navy-Blue-Spray-Paint-7723830/100163971), Gray (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ol...s-Charcoal-Gray-Spray-Paint-7784830/100128661), and White (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ol...mel-Gloss-White-Spray-Paint-7792830/100125235). The decals came from Callie Graphics (great quality and look awesome), and there are a lot of options there for the Corsair. I used 1/11th scale but for the mini-Corsair you would have to go much smaller scale then that.

To see how mine turned out just check:

Good luck!

Be sure to key the skin before painting, I use medium Scotchbrite abrasive pads, then make lots of light coats, start with a mist coat to get adhesion, otherwise the paint chips off really easily from FT foam. Some people seal the edges of exposed foam with PVA, I iron mine to a nice curve. Test paint on scrap foamboard first to mpbe sure it doesn’t melt the edges.

So, is that foam board? Did you primer at all? I've seen some guys do a coat of polyurethane down first, primary then paint. Gives a better shine too. The Marine saying is...ounces is pounds and pounds are pain. In flight, gram are ounces and ounces kill flight times lol.
I'm working on adding flaps/servos to my first FT cub build. Getting back into RC after about 8 years away. Wanna get the cub right before I paint and...some more stick time. Little rusty.
I want to go with the USMC WWII Cub/L4 grasshopper artillery spotter as opposed to the Army version. My son is a Marine and that navy blue looks so much better than army OD green. IMHO😋😁

Wake up! Time to fly!
Not that I am a guru with foam planes but I have had great results paint and decoration wise by taking one of those foam emery boards for fingernails and sanding down all edges of the foam where it is square and even. then taking the white Gorilla glue and coating the exposed foam and over lapping the paper by a few mm. Once that was done I used plain old automotive sanding primer on the entire build.

The key is to mist and let dry the primer before adding more until the coverage is even. then a light sanding and you can paint whatever you want on it.

Yes my Master Series Corsair was built from the speed build kit. I did sand their foam board lightly since it has a waterproof coating and the sanding helps the paint adhere better. I did not primer, but started with a very light coat of Rustoleum, let dry for 30 mins to 1hr and then repeated the process until fully covered. Usually would take 3-4 coats. Going with poly, primer, then paint would likely give an even smoother and cleaner look, but I was concerned with the additional weight.

Looking forward to what you come up with yourself.

That's awesome you got that quality and kept weight down. Food for thought!

Very nice! Building my 1st FT mini that dad sent. I’ve been reviewing your mods as well @dehager for balance. May I ask what paint you used? Wanting to use the darker sea blue and simple late war USMC markings.
Thanks!
