New at building RC planes and can't get motor to spin

My son purchased a FT tutor plane with:

1) 20A ESC
2) Basix B motor
3) FT pocket transmitter
4) R88 Receiver

He can get the servos to move, but the motor won't spin. When he was attempting to bind the receiver to the transmitter he got the motor to spin, but he couldn't get it to stop even while the throttle was at zero. He discovered he was using a different company's binding. So we know the motor functions. Using the correct binding he can only get the servos to respond, but not the motor. He has followed the calibration instructions for the ESC yet it has not changed anything. I have gone through it with him multiple times to make sure a step wasn't missing and we still get the same result. So I don't know where to go from here.

Any help would be appreciated, he has spent a lot of time trying to solve this and I am not knowledgeable about anything RC. Thank you for your time.

I’m new to rc planes. I recently ordered a FT bundle and it came with the pocket radio master it has a throttle cut to toggle throttle on and off.

Is it the FT Tutor Complete Starter Bundle with the red FT branded Pocket? The radio may have a pre-programmed throttle cut switch which needs to be armed for throttle use.

Yes we did buy the FT Tutor Complete Starter Bundle and we got the red FT branded Pocket. How would we arm the throttle cut switch for throttle use? We didn't see anything about it in the Quick Start guide/manual that was included.

Left top button on the radio I have which is the red FT cc2500 I got in a bundle. My radio has a voice that says it’s armed or off. I think they are called bumper buttons.
