Hey pilots ! I just started scratch building the FT Tutor my first FT plane, I built a first plane from a youtube video butI crashed it after a few seconds and I was looking for more thorough plans and video. The tutor looks exciting !

Can you please help me confirm this setup will work?

Emax XA2212 980 KV Motor
10x4.7 Slowfly Prop
Hobbywing 30A ESC
3S 1300 mah battery
cheap 9g servos
I am most anxious about the prop, I will buy from aliexpress since my post office works best with them (non US, not sure if I can share the link)

Thanks

You might consider a stronger motor. I have a Tutor and it does really well on the Sunnysky 2220 1150kv . Flite Test uses their 2218 1180kv motor on the Tutor. Just remember that if you decide to increase the motor size you will need a stronger ESC to match.

Hi,
the 2218 is recommended for the sport version or with floats.
The standard tutor is recommended with a 2212b - 1050kv, so mine will rotate slightly slower

  • Recommended Motor: 2212B-1050kv Standard, 2218B-1180kv Sport/Floats
  • Recommended Prop: 10×4.5 3s, 9×4.5 4s

The motor you have will work fine. Keep the weight low though. Don’t paint it, that can add a lot of weight. If you want to decorate, colored packing tape is best (not colored duct tape). Your battery choice is good for keeping the weight low.

What happened with your first one?

Thanks, will a 10x47 prop work as well as a 10x45 ?

I build a plane based on KendinYap YouTube video, fun build, learnt a ton, especially about messing with pushrods and servos.
In the end the plane flew way too fast for me and felt hard to control and crashed a few seconds in when I lowered the throttle.
So I wonder if the plane was a bit too nose heavy ? or just too small and not large enough wings. There was wind as well so I had to send it by hand and it felt waaay too strong.
I broke the nose and the prop, I reglued it but it's not as straight as it was, slightly too much to the right.
I will resend it next week end, and will use the electronics for the Tutor after I crash it some more haha

I wend for the Tutor because I need a slower, bigger plane

Another great plane for those electronics is the Scout. Not the mini Scout or XL Scout, the regular ”swapable”. It flies so sweetly with the 2212 and 1300. It’s one of the easiest to fly FT planes. I’d recommend that over the Tutor for the 2212. The Tutor is also a good choice though, I just really recommend the Scout.

I’ve heard the explorer is a good one too.👍

I heard a lot of good things about it but I wanted the bigger wingspan of the tutor...Now I am in doubt..I'll probably build it as well with my son.

It’s all about wing-loading, the lower the wing loading, the Easier it will be to fly, and it’ll be able to fly slower. Higher wing loading will make the plane harder to fly, and have to fly faster, but won’t be effected by wind as much. (Majority of my planes fall into this category)😂

Hey guys, so I built my Tutor, I loved every second of the process and it looks amazing. I flew it a couple times and while I loved it also, I have a couple issues with it:
  • As soon as I put some throttle it wants to go up, it goes very easily in vertical mode.
  • there is a slight roll to the right
  • When "landing" the elevator cracked in the middle and is now not perfectly straight, happend a couple times, I think it might be the reason for the roll. I tried to glue it but there is some slack and the sides of the elevator aren't exactly moving the same so it will be kind of asymmetrical sometimes.
Should I add a 3mm skewer to reinforce it ? (will post pictures when I get back home this evening.)
Trimming didn't seem to help so much.
The motor seems to be strong enough and allows me to fly slowly and have enough power to climb and do mild aerobatics. I can see it becoming a very good learning plane if I can fix those issues.

Agree. The normal sized FT Simple Scout is one of the most relaxing planes I've ever flown. Great for just about any conditions with a B or C power pack setup. Start with 3 channel if you like then move to 4. It is a ton of fun to fly at full power with 4 channel controls, you can get very acrobatic with that thing. It will also fly slowly. We didn't include the landing gear to cut down on weight, and we mostly fly over grass or tall weeds.

I am starting to build the Simple Scout, only disappointment so far is that it's not swappable with the tutor. I will build a 4 channel Ias I want to learn the real thing. i am having a great time with the tutor. Only missing a real runway to learn to land properly

For the slight roll to the right you can manually adjust the ailerons, ie move the servo horns on the center position, also double check your thrust angle, it seems to be a classic thrust angle problem. You could have your power pod shake loose and that be your thrust angle problem so I'd check for that too. It happened on my totem for the elevator a popsicle sticks in the middle and you are all set.
