Pre 1982 were copper. There is very little copper in a penny. They're mostly zinc. Only 2 or 3% copper since the early 80's.
Yup, we found that out...We melted a (I think it was like 2016) penny in a campfire one time and it was all shiny inside. (We were fighting inflation! JK 😂 😂 😂 )There is very little copper in a penny. They're mostly zinc. Only 2 or 3% copper since the early 80's.

Nice plan but I dont think it will be to profitable !i have a penny collection i'm hoping to melt down when copper skyrockets
I remember I heard a story that back in the day people started to do this melting pennies for copper and they were making a good amount of money but eventually metal rims were added to the sides of the coin to prevent people from melting them or something like that. LOL! I know the theory is "Buy low and sell high" but in practice I always default to "Buy high and sell low". Wish I could break the cycle.i never understood the phrase, 'don't sell it, it's worth a fortune'.
