New to Hobby and have questions

I recently purchased the FT TUTOR bundle and have had a ball building the plane and installing the electronics etc. I am stoked to get it in the air. I keep reading about expos and cannot find an easy to understand explanation on how to set it up on my Radio Master Pocket. Can anyone help? Is it even necessary for a beginner? Any feedback would be really appreciated.

... Is it even necessary for a beginner? ...
No, expo is not necessary. Expo is a personal choice, some like using a lot & some prefer none. Myself, I like something around 25-30%. I would not go more than 50% unless you are an expert. It's best to start low & see how you like it

If I recall expo is on the output or mixer tab. I'm away from my Tx so I'm not 100% confident which tab it is on.

I took the plane out intending to try some short take offs and landings. As I increased the throttle and pulled back the elevator it would go straight up and stall and pull to one side before crashing. Should I have toggled the rates to 50 percent? Thoughts on what I did wrong?

hello, i run the cc2500 and can help you if you still have questions.

rates can vary depending on plane.

are you using a stabilizer?
was plane going up and too the left?
has anyone talked to you or have you read about trimming your plane once in air?

You pulled too hard on the elevator.

This is a common mistake for beginners. Next time be a bit easier on the elevator. Pulling up too hard on takeoff will slow the plane to the point it stalls. That is, it doesn't have enough air speed to fly & will drop suddenly.

When the plane leaves the ground aim for a climb angle of 10-20%. Try to get about 200 feet high, this will time to correct for about 3 mistakes before the plane hits the ground.

I am not using a stabilizer and I believe it did pull to the left. I saw a video about trimming but to be honest, there wasn't enough time. I'm still trying figure out how to set up expo, could you send me screenshots on exo set up? Can expo be used to make the throttle not so touchy as well?

Good advice, I'll try to remember to be easy on the levers. Thank you.

Yes I did.
I believe expo should already be programmed into the transmitter. I tried finding the video where Josh talks about the pocket transmitter that has already planes programmed in. But no luck yet on my end. I know Josh likes to use 30% expo. I hope this helps. I will keep on looking.

First, let me thank you for your willingness to help a complete novice, it is much appreciated. Does this screen show the expos at 30 percent? I'll check out the video when I get a chance.

i guess you could run expo on throttle 🤔
i personally have not ad when i want the juice i want the JUICE. i run expo on elevator and aileron, usually 25-30 really “dampers” out any immediate jumpiness.

my first thought on up and left is torque roll. if your prop is spinning cw (looking from the tail toward the front spinning cw) torque roll is going up left….so you have to immediately counter with some aileron right.

i run expo on my input, hold down “select” with the spinning wheel until a window opens, select edit, scroll down.

Currently I am running 3 channel until I get comfortable. Do you think if I add expo to the rudder and elevator and ease up on the throttle (to avoid the torque issue) I should be ok? Thank you for the pics btw

without being there and seeing i am just guessing…but i know this… if you dont try again you will never get there 😎

when i launch (everything except the big motors) i go full thrust and launch with a lot of juice 45 degrees in the air….like i am throwing football. and my goal is to just get the plane go climb and glide, then once i know i am flying i testing L & R ailerons.

making sure your control surfaces are straight with the wing is vital too…unless you are specifically tuning out torque roll.

from here, trimming is vital, say your plane is pulling left, add rudder right and aileron right. make sense?

trim until the plane flies dead straight if you let go of the right stick….then you have a straight flying plane.

You make a lot of sense. The control surfaces were straight, I double checked before I started. It never occurred to me to hand launch it since it has the large tires. I can even remove the wheels and recheck the CG and hand launch it. Once I have it trimmed, I assume the settings will be stored in the radio? Even with the issues I am having a ball. 😉

yes, you applied expo on your mixes page.
i just personally do it on my input page so its first in the chain and goes to everything.

man its so much fun….i am kind of the redneck when it comes to rc planes.

I didn't put the expo in on the mixes tab, it came that way. But if the expo shows 30 percent, why does the graph remain blank? Should I still try and add it in the input tab? I get it, it is quite addictive.

This is just an idea. Don't modify any of the programs that are already in the radio. That way you always have a good program stored in the radio. Start with a new model. Make your own program. Because some day you will need that skill. If the new program is bad, you can always delete it. Do a search in YouTube an look for Edge TX. Look for a guy name Painless 360. He has some good videos. I'll see if I can find something on my end. Good luck.
