Plans are printed, Next stop... Dollar Tree, Then I am going to cut some foam tonight and attempt my first build. My plan is to build several air frames into chuck gliders to get the building down, then graduate to RC sometime soon. I have been watching FliteTest videos for a few years just dreaming. I attended FliteFest East as a spectator and had a blast. Can't wait for it this year!

Awesome! The Sparrow is a quick and easy build. I can't recommend making it your first RC build though, that thing is extremely twitchy and has coupling issues.

I am building the tiny trainer for my first RC, going to buy the speed build kit. Can't wait. Thanks for the reply!

You're going to have a blast. One suggestion with the Tiny trainer; once you've built it, paint it a SCREAMING color. Like NEON Green, or ELECTRIC purple, or FLUORESCENT pink. Something that's not a light grey, and not a sky blue. The smaller planes, as soon as you get them about 100 ft. up in the air, they're harder to see because they're tiny. :) And, try to paint the top a different color, or put some alternating color stripes somewhere so you can tell the top of the wing from the bottom of the wing in case you get inverted for some reason. It'll also help on landing, so you can tell if your approach is coming in high or low; if you see too much of the bottom of the wing, you may be high or stalling the plane prematurely.

Well..... I'm officially hooked, I had such a blast building the FT Sparrow. After watching all of the videos and reading on the forums for so long it really went well. The speed build kit would definitely "speed" it up. maybe next time. Once I started I couldn't stop, just ask my wife, lol. I took it out in the yard with my boys and we had a blast playing with the elevators and nose weight until we got it to soar all the way across the field. Looking forward to more building and getting my kids to join in as well. I will see you all at FliteFest next month!

Ahh, looks like I’ve got to knock one out tomorrow. I want to make Toothless, like they had in the Dragon battle video; that should catch the eye of kids at the Maker Faire next weekend!

Yeah, that video was really cool. Where is the maker fair at next weekend?

This particular Maker Faire will be in Vista, CA, at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in the 16th & 17th.

If you’d like more info, it’ll be here:

http://northcounty.makerfaire.com/

I’ll be there trying to get people interested in making planes, learning how to fly, building chuck gliders, and hopefully giving away a balsa trainer if someone is interested!

LOL JUST a little bit of a drive...

That's ok, though. Keep your eyes open, there are Maker Faires all over the world, and it's something really cool to go to. Some of the bigger ones have ongoing drone racing, and pull in some awesome makers, like Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame, or the Eepybirds, who first did the "Bellagio Fountains" display of Mentos & Coke and became a YouTube sensation.

Looks like there's several in Ohio happening in September - Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo, if you're interested; you can check it out at http://makerfaire.com and then search by your state/location to see more details. Even the Mini Maker Faires can be beneficial, and if there's a rabid group of Makers, pretty soon you'll find it growing into a full on Maker Faire. And really, FT junkies who are making these planes? We are the very definition of Makers. We build and cobble something together from easily identifiable components, and we try to create something that is functional outside of store bought goods. We love kits and making our OWN kits, we want to wire up new power distribution boards and ESCs and understand the right power levels for our planes...

That's kind of what being a Maker is all about. :)
