Its very awsome man, to finally see the speed build kit being produced. Now just to see it in store and the build video with you and josh building the mig3 (with my hatch design too haha) keep the updates going man

John thanks for all your support this last year!

Jaxx! Thanks man! It's been so awesome to work with FT this week.

Nic,
I can only imagine. The reward of that experience is well deserved. Hey, check your email when you get a chance. I sent you a couple of links related to something we had discussed a while back.

Got it! I'll check the videos out this weekend.

I maidened my MiG on Saturday. It didn't go as well as I had hoped, LOL.

The launch was OK, it turned left quite a bit due to motor torque, but it immediately straightened out.

Then I got a quick feel for how sensitive the elevator was, and began to gain altitude so I could start trimming her out.

Things were going OK until I started that left turn. It was a little sluggish going in, so I kept feeding in more stick and then suddenly the inside wing tip-stalled and she rolled inverted. I paused a moment to recover some airspeed and when I tried to roll it back right-side-up it did a complete roll and I very nearly lost orientation. It seemed hyper-responsive and overcontrolling.

At this point, I'm just hoping to level it out before it hits the ground. I manage to mostly do so, and it didn't nose in.

It came down RH wingtip first. The wing attachment points failed, and the wing came loose. The upper wing skin got a single crease in it, but the structure stayed intact. Then the fuselage hit, damaging the RH nose bottom and briefly twisting the power pod enough to loosen one of the locating pins for the firewall. Lastly the fuselage bounced back on the LH tip of the horizontal stabilizer, causing about an inch of crinkled foam, mostly on the bottom side.

Relatively minor damage, considering how badly it could have ended. It's almost 100% fixed already. The power pod got slightly crunched and now has a small amount of right and down thrust. I'm going to leave it that way, rather than replace it. It's plenty sturdy... it's just had it's angle changed a bit. The motor and prop came out unscathed.

I'm thinking that there were three major factors in the crash. 1) excessive control throw, 2) excessive expo, and 3) dumb thumbs.

My theory is that I had the aileron throws set so badly and with so much travel that they actually caused tip stalling.

What's an acceptable amount of travel for the various control surfaces?

Strix my man, so sorry about your crash. Based on the video I'm 99% sure you had too much elevator throw. As you made the turn you banked and then gave elevator to smooth out, this is when you went into the spin. Let me make a throw gauge tonight and add it to the plans so others can avoid this issue also.

One other thing to note. After working with Josh I realized that the CG I had set in the plans was slightly tail heavy. This causes the elevator to be even more sensitive and creates the roll issue with too much deflection. The plans now have the correct CG indicated.

Oh and for your exponential setting I recommend more vs less. I fly 55% on my ail and 35 on elv.

Thanks Dan! Do you know when your episode is going to air yet?

No idea yet. Still trying to work out dates with Flite Fest to shoot them. Hopefully it will be in the next couple of weeks. Just waiting to hear back from Bixler.

Congrats again. I can't wait to see your episodes.

The elevator throw may have been excessive, too, but I really had trouble with the ailerons. I've nearly completed repairs on her, and have reduced the throws considerably.

Measured deflection is currently 1 cm for the ailerons, and about 1.25 cm for the elevator. Low rates are about 70% of that, and both low and high rates have 30% expo (25-30% is my preferred setting on most other planes).

I was going with the CG originally stated on the 'basic wing' plans. Being tail-heavy would explain a lot of the flight characteristics. It looks like your v 1.2 plans have moved the CG forward about 1-1.5 cm, where it's almost, but not quite, right on the first bend in the wing. I removed some lead that was added to the tail and moved the battery forward a bit and I'm right on the new CG.

Now I just have to touch up the paint here and there and she's ready for another try.

finally got to fly mine this weekend with the 10x10. it was way to windy to fly but since I had a budy there to give it a good launch, I went with it. flies nice but with the 4s 5k battery it is very heavy. gotta keep the speed up for sure on the landing, and I tip stalled it at the very end trying to flare it.

I've got some pretty bad video I'll upload later, but being it was so windy I didn't try any low fly by passes and the place I was at up in the mountains was 3 times my normal gflying field size. so I couldn't get a feel for if it was a 100 mph plane or not lol. but it sure did cover ground.

strix: I've crashed mine a few times and I will definitely agree it was to much elevator that caused yours. I've got max alirons throws on my high rates switch and never noticed any issues with it, they act like any other plane I've flown with high alirons rates. just if you go to crazy on elevator it will do that. so be careful dialing down your alironsso mmuch that you can't fight the tq roll on launch.

Pictures just cannot do Strix' Mig3 justice. This is one of the best looking DTFB planes I've ever seen. The finish on it is amazing and the extra details really make it stand out. It was really great meeting you at FF15 and talking to you about your Mig3 Strix. Awesome job.

Nic! It was awesome meeting you at FF2015, thank you for the tips on my nnMig-3, I really love the way it flies now, I was tearing up the skies at my flying field and blowing the leaves off the trees with fast, close, flybys. it tracks like an arrow now and gives me the confidence to move in really close to the trees... Looks awesome blasting by the trees at full speed and just barely touching the leaves with a wingtip!

I wish I could have hung out longer with you, you are much cooler in person! I love the way you fly too, very exciting to watch, the videos don't do your flying justice... I liked how you flew that 650 behind you down the flightline without looking behind you at 120mph! That was just awesome!

Still trying to find time to put an article together for my Aerowing 30. I had several people fly it at FF2015 and everyone seemed to like it, and Josh though I should do an article on it, I just want to do it right the first time, any tips you can give me on putting together an article that will get published? I appreciate what you do for the community and us individuals who had the honor of meeting you and talking with you on the forums... thanks again

It was great to meet you too! And really nice work on the Aerowing 30. It flew so precise and crisp, a true testament to the design and build quality.

I'm glad to hear your MiG is tearing up the trees, haha. She really is a blast to fly. I don't remember flying my Sonic Series behind me though.. I must have done it by mistake haha.
