Non-two dimensional antenna for Tx/Rx?

It seems like most antenna setups are some form of a two dimensional shape or, in the case of skew planar or cloverleaf, a two dimensional shape in multiple axes. Is there some three dimensional shape such as a sphere or half sphere that would still provide the necessary polarization and provide good transmission/reception?
