I love the Japanese A5m4 "Claude" and it is one of my favorite planes if not my favorite. The Ki-61 is the competition for it.

Oh yeah. Where I live is good upland bird territory, so we hunt pheasants and quail some. We hunt doves too. Once in a while at night we use scope mounted spotlights on rifles to shoot coyotes (yes it's legal). We call them with an electronic call.

I do some whitetail hunting. I prefer fishing tho. Bass fishing early summer with a top water frog is the best. Ice fishing is great too.

Anyone else hunt? I live kinda close-ish to Blythe so we get a great dove hunt once or twice a year.

I started hunting when I was 8 and got my first bb gun for my birthday. My family was big on hunting. My dad and uncles had bought a camp in Maine and we would go up twice a year once in spring to do repairs or upgrades. In fact the first year I was allowed to go it still only had an outhouse and a hand pumped well. Took 4 years to finish indoor plumbing.

Come winter we would go up to hunt. Deer, bear, geese, rabbits, as well as clear off coyotes a few years with them getting over populated. I remember the third time I went up and the first year I was allowed to go on the hunting trip I ended up ending everyone's trip. Seems I had caught the measles in school and they manifested the second day of the trip after I was sitting next to the huge cast iron stove to warm up and dry out after falling into the creek when trying to jump across following older cousins. Man was my dad and uncle Jack pissed off.

Only hunted one time here in New York since I moved here back in the mid 90's Got permission to hunt a family friends property. He would allow 4 hunters each year to use a quadrant of the property and his lodge as base camp for deer season. I spotted my area for months before season to find the perfect place and to see what was around to be added to the dinner table. NEVER saw another person on the property.

First day of the season got up at 3am, ate, de-scented, geared up and headed out to my stand by 4:30am. Got to the stand a little after 5 am and the wait started. I could hear the little critters starting to wake up. Thought I heard some larger stuff too and thought geez its awful early for that. I hope they don't come thru this spot early and I have to wait till evening return to see anything.

Things quieted down and the sun was starting to show its light. I thought I heard whispers but was like I am the only one supposed to be in this spot. By the time the sun was up I could see three other people NONE with permission to be there. If a deer came thru I could see cross fire issues and the potential for someone getting hurt was high. So I pointed my gun at the ground straight down and let a round fly. That startled AND angered the other guys who were more worried I scared the deer so they immediately began cursing me out. In the midst of all the yelling I told them I would show them my written permission to be on the property if they showed me theirs. There was some back and forth and finally I just radioed base camp to call a warden to come for these knuckleheads at which point they shut up and skedaddled.

Later in the season we were on that same property on the farm side that had a stream that passed kitty corner. Nearly dead center of the field the stream spit and there was a good size island there we played paint ball on. About two hours in we were hanging out warming up with some coffee shooting the breeze when a shot gun fired pretty close to us. Then two more shots fired after that in quick succession. Then the pellets started hitting around us. We all scattered and did the end around in two teams to go see what was going on. As we peeked over the hill onto the field we say two hunters walking across the open field. The older one grabbed the younger ones hat and tossed it in front of them as they walked and proceeded to shoot the hat.

We started yelling at them and nothing . We thought they were ignoring us. We chased them down the whole time yelling because they were shooting in the direction our other friends split off to. We finally get to them and my friend grabbed the big guys arm and spun him around. This dude about :poop: his pants and freaked out making weird noises. Come to find out they were both deaf and had got lost and were cutting across the field to get back to a road and see where they were.

After that I was positive there was no reason for me to risk getting shot by total idiots up here and just shoot for fun to keep skills up now on the rare occasion I get to go out and actually shoot.

Man those are some cool stories. I bought my gun in 2018 I think, it's a newer model Mossberg 500. I've since kinda tacticooled it out with a 590 police forend and some side saddles, . I shot trap for a long time but was always busy when my family did hunts. My first hunt was last September at the dove opener in Blythe. Easily one of the best places in the country for dove, I managed to get five on my first hunt. I've gone for quail and deer since then but with the fires this has been a pretty terrible season and I haven't managed to get anything at all.

Not too much dove hunting where I grew up but there was a game preserve which they regularly stocked with farm bred pheasant. The game preserve was part wetlands too so it was also great for deer, ducks, geese, quail, and squirrel. You could also trap muskrats if you were lucky enough to win the permit raffle they did to keep control of a waning population.

Got a few stories from that area alone as I was growing up.

I still have my first shotgun. It was an Ithica 410 single shot lever actuated breach. Won my first turkey shoot with that little gun too. Sadly I was shooting against grown ups and they complained I only won because I used a 410 vs their 12 guage so I got less spread. the shells were purchased at the field and were loaded the exact same way with the exact same pellet counts to keep things fair. You paid for your shell, the line officer handed you the shell and you shot right there and then thus not leaving any chance for people to change or modify the shells. Pretty sad people would bring shells that had wax in them to keep tighter patterns just to win a turkey.. thus creating the need to do the competition that way.

On a different note. I have been working on dialing in my video card settings so I can post videos of game play or live action set ups for quads at some point maybe. Here is my attempt from this mornings changes.

WARNING Explicit language and gore watch at your own risk. (not my fault its in the game and I have no control over that)

No pheasant out here sadly, not unless you pay an arm and a leg to hunt at Tejon or something. We do have turkey though but it's all up north, I don't exactly have the gear for it either although my MOPP gear might work pretty well.

You guys have the good ole fashion turkey shoots? The ones our gun club did were set up where you had a 1m tail wood rail you could chose to use to shoot from or free stand shoot but that was basically the firing line. They had standard paper targets about the size of a dinner plate about ~15m away. (I think officially it was 50ft)

They would have different age groups, different size shot gun groups and a free class where anyone could compete with what they brought shotgun wise. To enter you lined up when the class was called there were 5 line officers at the shooting stations where you would pay a dollar for the official shell for the event usually standard Winchester rounds that were certified untampered with or for certain classes certified reloads with exact pellet counts. and take your one shot. after all the shooting was done pellet counts were done and the winner of that round would win a prize.

They started out as a holiday thing and frozen turkeys were the prizes. Over time as it got bigger they started adding in different things like cleaning kits, soft gun cases, lots of ammo, boots, camouflage. Eventually it grew big enough they added in really nice shot guns as grand prizes for the top level class. The last one I got to go to before I left for the Navy they were giving away a 12g Browning semi auto with at the time the fancy new injection molded hard cases they have today.

I've never heard of anything like that, maybe one of the local ranges does it and I'm just missing it. I've always shot trap, it's not the cheapest out here they usually charge about $10 a game and a box of shells is the same price more or less. We get the bulk boxes of clays from Walmart and run out to the desert, with three or four people shooting we can go through three boxes of clays in a few hours. Shooting a 12g that long recoil management becomes key, I've gotten really good at Rob Haught's push-pull method and can shoot nearly all day with no pain.

I know some of the local ranges do amateur trap tournaments, I've been meaning to go sometime but have never gotten around to it.

This was back in the 70's and 80's. It may have fallen out of fashion or like anything else got shut down by overly sensitive PC people or due to that whole no private food handling thing back in the 90's.
