Reviving Nerdnic Designs

After building nearly a dozen FT planes, including the Master's Spitfire, I swore I wouldn't go back to simple builds (other than the 3rd party Tigercat), but I have decided to build the nnChimpunk v2. I'll let you know how it goes. We should show this guy some love for his thoughtful designs.

Not to highjack the thread but I thought I'd share my experience. Just finished and maidened my V2 chipmunk. The build was straightforward after having done several MS series planes. I really like the tapered tail feather construction. My thanks to nerdnic for the free plans and a great overall experience.

I'm running the flite test 2814/1100kV with a 9x6 prop on 2200maH 4s. I fab'd the battery tray, motor mount and control horns(reinforced with CA) with basswood. The gaudy paint job was referencing a joke with a friend of mine who would have a gold toilet if he could.

It flies great and is plenty fast. Probably the easiest landing plane I've built so far.

Do any of you know how much different the other nerdnic designs fly compared to the chipmunk? I was thinking about doing the Mig3 next, but if it flies similar to the chipmunk, I may focus the foamboard on something else.

Thought it worth mentioning, the FT Mig3 is based off of NerdNic's Mig3.
I haven't built any of the NN designs, but I imagine that if you've flown a NN plane and you've flown a fast, swappable FT plane, you can probably extrapolate how both versions of the Mig-3 will fly.

Built the NN Spitfire 800 Series a month ago and it really scooted until the wing folded because I failed to put a big enough spar in. The build wasn't to bad and I really like how the edges of the wing are all tapered down.

I think my chipmunk is a good all around plane. It can by flown by a newer pilot since it's light in the air and doesn't have bad tendencies, but it can also be more aggressive in the hands of an experienced pilot if you put the speedwing on it.

Since you built the basic wing version, my P-39 or 800 spit might be a good next step for you. They are much slipperier than my chipmunk and in my opinion do not 'feel' the same - with the spit being the most different.

My mig with the speedwing is also a fun flyer, but it uses older building techniques and you'll really miss the battery hatch if you build it over the FT version. I have the v2 files on my computer that I just never finished..

One day :)

Thanks for the input. I just finished a FT Spit, which I ran the 2814 motor on 4S and it screams so I decided the other day to go with the P-39, again with the 2814 motor and 4S. Considering how fast the Chipmunk was, the P-39 ought to be stupefying fast for me. I'll send pics when done.
