Round 2!!!!

Hello again, it's a great day for flying. This is round 2 for me. I think I have a treat for you. My gold this time is to be more comprehensive using what I've learned so far. Please feel free to chime in, and enjoy!! Today I'm going to take my beat up Sparrow out. Pass tests showed that I need to add more weight to the nose. I'm also going to try the Tiny Trainer wings on it. This should be fun!!! First I am going to do some comprehensive preflight test and benchmarks.

I seem to have lost contact on this flight, the motor just stopped on me.


2nd flight and final flight this morning. I didn't have the parts with me to fix it.


I don't seem to have enough weigh in the nose. this is the best I've ever done, and it's the most weight I've had in the nose. I'm going to repair and add more weight. I've ordered 2 more planes... however on this build I'm going to put together the servo wings from the trainer. I don't think it will work but won't know until I try.

I think most of the problem now is your own skill in flying, which you will get from practice. Looking at the second video, the plane was flying OK. It went up when you pulled on the stick and level when you didn't. If you have to use a bit of down on the stick to fly level, you need to adjust the elevator trim, not add weight.

Most planes need some trimming to get them to fly nicely. An out of trim plane can be really difficult to fly even for moderately experienced flyers. Unfortunately to trim a plane, you need to be able to get some height and be able to get basic control of it before you get a chance to see what it needs. As a beginner, you'll be panicking all the time just trying to stop the thing from crashing. It's always better if you can get an experienced flyer to sort out the trimming before you try and fly it yourself, but i guess you don't have that opportunity.

Wow. You've gone from not even being able to get the plane in the air to actually flying, albeit briefly. Please continue to inspire those of us who are still looking forward to just getting in the air.

It is so hard to get that first flight. So many people quit before they get as far as you have.

Don't push a jittery motor.

Check the solder joints and connections.

Do you have any wires between the ESC and motor or Bullet connectors crossing or able to touch metal to metal?

I agree, the jittering is electrical, a short or broken connection. The grinding is another issue, could be a loose bell housing or magnet, could be a metal fragment or bearing. Something is loose or grinding. It’s unlikely but the grinding could have shorted one of the windings.

I'm thinking its not the motor so has to be the ASC.

This is a VERY common issue. It happens to everyone. Pushing it most often results in a smoked motor or ESC. Don't push it. If it jitters, stop immediately and go looking for a hot part.

Why was it working fine then crap out?

The most likely cause is a bad solder joint on one of the three main motor wires somewhere or a loose bullet connector. It can also be a faulty MOSFET in the ESC, in which case you need a new ESC.

If you try and run the motor like that, there's a very good chance that it will burn out.

That’s just the nature of the beast, ESC’s just burnout. My buddies buy expensive ESC’s & I buy the cheap ones. They all burn out at about the same rate.

In a crash, if you have the throttle on and the motor can not spin, you will burnout the ESC.

My budget is not great, but I'll buy another A kit to help resolve this. My guess is the esc. I wish flitetest would more focus on what can go wrong as well as what the are doing. Parts ordered, Nov 5 is eta. 85$.I also picked up a Flite Test Mighty Mini Mustang Electric Airplane Kit (737mm). So 3 planes are coming.
