i have 2 of these engines and am getting ready to do this myself. thats a nice looking spad Farm Boy looks like a great flyer. how does that ignition system work or is it just an upgrade? also, how did you do your prop hub and motor mount?
Hey guys, Sorry for the late response.
The ignition requires a small magnet mounted to the prop hub or crankshaft. The kit linked on post #10 will come with a sensor that mounts to the bearing housing. The magnet must be timed to pass under the sensor at around 28 degrees before TDC. The sensor mount holes are slotted so you can fine tune it once the engine is running. For power I just use a 750mah 2s Life battery. It will run the cdi for several hours. Once set up, its really easy to start your engine. Just prime, a little choke, and flip the prop a few times. You can idle really slow too cause it still sends a good spark at low rpm where a magneto will not.
For a prop hub, I used a hole saw to cut out the center part of the flywheel. This is used mostly as a spacer and to mount the cdi sensor magnet. I drilled and tapped the flywheel nut all the way through and then slide the prop over the outside of the flywheel nut and use a bolt and washer to tighten it.
Motor mount took some time. Started with some flat aluminum and made a c-channel with flanges on the ends to mount to the firewall. The closed part of the c-channel mounts to the engine and has a large circle cut out for the carb. Stand off mounts would work too.
