Scaling down and corrupting the next generation. :)

Hi all,

Hi! I'm a "full scale" pilot, and love everything that flies. I have a couple of kids (8 and 2), and both of them are airplane nuts as well.

I've been watching Flite Test with my older son for a few years, and we're both working on our building and flying skills. He's been flying a foam C-17 that we purchased from Flite Test in person at Oshkosh; I just flew a 3D printed airplane that we built.

Not only have Flite Test, Peter Sripol, ProjectAir, Troy McMillan, Xyla Foxlin and other YouTubers helped pique his interest in flying airplanes, they've also made him interested in building. We got the 3D printer for the primary purpose of printing airplanes after seeing some of Troy's videos, and after a while he said "Daddy, I want to learn CAD!" (Big-time dad win there.)

I'm going to post another thread with some questions about what airplane to get for him next - He needs to learn how to fly with 4 channels so he doesn't immediately destroy his pride and joy 3D printed plane!

Sounds fun! If you don't already have a 3D program in mind I recommend Onshape (y)

We started using TinkerCAD. That was a great way to start, and he really enjoys it. He can also use it from his iPad so he doesn't keep asking to use my computer. ;)

Another thing we created with TinkerCAD is nose cones and empennages for model rockets that are sized such that we can use empty toilet paper and paper towel tubes for the main body. There's also a connector piece we can use between two tubes for more possible sizes:

I've been working on learning Fusion360 - It's just hard to find something that works well for me to learn: Too hard to make in TinkerCad, but easy enough to make in Fusion360 that I don't just give up. LOL

Funny, I did pretty much the same thing when I started learning cad…. I still have rockets!😂.
But on a side note, I’ve tried fusion and Onshape, and I still prefer Onshape. (It also doesn’t overload my computer…)
