Scratch building wood pieces?

Hi everyone,

Thinking about scratch building the Master Series Spitfire with my 5 mm depron foam. I noticed its got some wooden spars to strengthen the wing but I don't have access to plywood. What alternatives can I use? Would a popsicle stick be enough to support the bends?

Thanks..

Welcome to the forum! The wood spars are to keep the wings from folding, not to support the folds...So I would not suggest using popsicle sticks...However if you have excess to a Ace Hardware or LOWES 1/16" aluminum would work quite well (y)

Anything strong stiff and lite will work when it is the proper size. Arrow shafts, fishing poles, dowell, wood strips, fiberglass, whatever you're good at using that is just sitting there handy.. stay away from steel shapes, just way too heavy for the strengths.

You will be mostly trying to stop the foamboard from creasing /folding unintended.

Douglas fir 2 x 4 x 96 (yuppa have one out of my 1950's house when I removed some wall) cut to appropriate spar size on the table saw using a finish carbide blade. Maybe even sand it. Dont use the current offerings at the orange or blue store, they are half water
