Scratch Built Focke Wulf FW-190

I based this off of the Miniac Mini P-40. I designed my own wings, elevator and vertical stabilizer as well as custom posterboard slabs for the front cowl.

295 grams without a battery
27" wingspan
2205 2300kv motor + 5045 prop

Planning to maiden her tomorrow. I'll post a video if I get one.

Here's the video of the maiden:

WOW! I mean WOW! Totally awesome flight (yeah, I'm 50 and I just said "totally awesome.) My family is sleeping, and I SO want to crank up the audio to max and watch that again. Thank you for that. Thank you. One Day. That will be me. One day.

You have seriously inspired me (A lot of people on this forum seem to do that). You've taken it another level. Well. Done. Period.

Thanks guys. I debated adding the iron crosses but they really do complete the look.
I agree, the crosses complete the look. Personally, I wouldn't have done it though. Our current world culture is such that anything considered hateful, is hateful. As a foam plane, it's just a foam plane and nobody would have recognized it as otherwise.

Once you put the crosses on it becomes Nazi. Nazi's were and are, seriously hateful people. (I have read and heard that most of the Nazi army didn't know what was actually going on, but the whole Nazi philosophy is well known now, and yes. BAD.) That was an awesome aircraft in it's time, and your model depicts it well.

Most people probably won't notice or care. I'd like to build an FW-190 one day just because it was such an airborne tank. I'm not going to mark it though. Why invite trouble?

I mostly agree. I decided to add them as they aren't a strictly Nazi symbol having predated them but it's a tough call either way. Hell, even building a German warbird gave me pause.

But ultimately it's a tribute to a beautiful design which is as far as I go.

My family fought the Nazis and learned of their cruelty and inhumanity first hand.

By removing scale and historical markings is almost the same as trying to clean up history, sanitize it!

Whilst I definitely deplore the actions of the Nazi regime I am reminded that sadly most were ordinary people before they were effected or indoctrinated. There is a danger that in sanitizing history we reduce its impact and desensitize future generations laying the ground work for a repetition of history!

Each of us has to make their own decisions but I will not WHITEWASH history to be politically correct! If I offend people I just remind them that the Nazis were factual and abhorrent in the extreme so I want others to remember them and what they did for all of time!

NEVER AGAIN!

Have fun!

All that being said. And read and thought about and understood. The bad guys had some nice planes. Wanting to build and fly one, I'm OK with that. I want to do an FW as previously stated. Not marking it as the bad years Germany went through isn't "Whitewashing." It's not ignoring everything that happened.

We should be able to recognize the great planes through the ages, recognize when a regime was wrong, and also recognize how other's might see that chosen plane.

You are a perfect subject for my point. It's just a plane. Don't do the graphics. Others may not react well,

They are just planes. Leave it as such, and it remains as such. The Germans built so many iconic planes. Let's not toss that away. Let's recognize that they were used in a way that was abhorrent. Don't mark them. (My opinion.) My gosh, though, build and fly them!

You are correct especially in relation to the quality of the designs and plane performances. My point was that displaying the insignia of an actual aircraft is NOT supporting Nazism! Some very talented and decent people fought and died for their country and families in aircraft with the Nazi markings!

As a side note: The Concentration camps, often seen as a Nazi invention of inhumanity, were/are actually an English invention used first in the Boer War! Displaying the "Union Jack" in any form is not supporting the use of concentration camps!

Not that I fit insignia to many aircraft but if I did it would be as historically accurate as I could possibly get. If that upsets some I would remind them that it is history that should be upset with and not me for making things as historically accurate as possible.

have fun!

You are one hardcore son-of-a-gun, Hai-Lee. That's one of the things I love about you. And you are right, it SHOULDN'T matter. Here in the South of the United States there have recently been entire riots over historical statues. Violence over displaying a flag from one hundred and fifty years ago. It's ugly. All because they are seen as symbols of hatred and oppression by some, and family history by others. That's why I wouldn't mark a Nazi plane. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was supporting a hate-filled mindset.

Building a historically accurate model aircraft should not be a political statement. Around here, flying that aircraft is liable to lead to bad things happening. Why invite trouble? Having some crosses on the wings just isn't that important.

Personally, it's not that big of a deal. I know that when I build any plane, for a long time to come, I'm just going to crash it anyway. Definitely takes a load off of the shoulders.

@Sandman2749 .... This 54 year old just said TOTALLY WICKED!!! NICE! I would like to build one.

As this Forum frequently goes into Tangents (rarely a Bad thing!!), in this case, the bottom line is, Symbols are just that! Symbols. Intangible, non-living.... Can't perform ANY function! It's the PEOPLE, not the symbols.
Some people, especially in the "Snowflake" Generation, are Keen on whitewashing History, if it doesn't serve their Agenda. That's as WRONG as the people who committed the heinus acts in the first place.

Your Aircraft is Beautiful. No Matter if it came from the Nazi Regime or the Boy Scouts, it represented one of the pinnacles of Piston powered Aircraft Design!! It deserves it's place along the Mustang, Spitfire, Corsair, Thunderbolt, and even the Zero!

EDIT: I just watched the Video again. One of the smoothest Maidens I've seen yet!! And the music was even appropriate.
BTW, I'm in southern Arizona.... WHAT'S all that white stuff all over the place???:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I am just a current version of a family with a 2000 year documented history of being hardcore some things are apparently inherited!

As for the symbols of hatred, (I am aware of the problems the US had with some of the Civil war era statues of southern heroes), they are in fact symbols of hatred but only for those who wish them to be! In a land of the free it seems that you are not as free as you would think!
Intolerance appears in many forms, and in the case of the original symbols of our little discussion they represent crimes perpetrated by the INTOLERANT! When one group exerts its power to control others is so very close to the regime that the symbol actually represented that they could even qualify to wear it.

As a side note, (again), it should be noted that in the country where the original symbol originated and is banned by law, (as a criminal offence), there is a problem with the rise of nationalism yet AGAIN! Without the reminder of the evil, the people are actually attracted to it as some sort of forbidden fruit. Symbols have no power other than to remind us of what they once represented, unless we give it to them.

If my EDUCATED tolerance is intolerable to some then I tolerate their views even though my own views are not tolerated! In a modern world the need for some to exert power and influence over others is akin to the very thing that has caused over 2000 years of human misery and suffering and where such power and influence has had little effect, between nations, war normally ensues! Eradicating a symbol because of historical implications is a waste of effort when the causes of the things that the symbols supposed represent are allowed in society and even encouraged by governments!

To me the symbol represents MUCH including my own Grandfathers service, (he joined in 1940 when aged 45 because his sons were too young to serve). Each time I see the symbol it reminds ME of my grandfather and his wartime service FIRST and then the many millions that died because of the war! If you really want to get at the real cause of both the rise of the Nazi party and the whole National socialist movement then you MUST put people FIRST! Had the Treaty of Versailles not been so punitive then Germany's people would not have been so oppressed that they voted for Hitler and his policy of repudiation of the terms of the treaty. Had the french government actually forgiven the war debt after the great depression had started then the German people would have been able to feed themselves and not need to seek a savior as Hitler appeared to be!

Had Germany itself not been reduced in status by the signatories of the treaty of Versailles to where it could be attacked and defeated by Belgium and also if Germany had not had its territories stripped and handed to the victor countries just because it was on the losing side, then Hitler would not have risen to power as he did!

You can ban or otherwise eradicate the symbols but it will NEVER remove the real problems. Intolerance, hatred, fear mongering, nationalism, and oppression of minorities are FAR FAR more of concern and are actually on the rise around the world! I have 4 sons and I would hope that they can also miss out on war service, (only the second generation to do so in 2000 years in the case of my family). Promote tolerance and acceptance of others and their views, You need not adopt their views but learn to acknowledge and accept them. Where a person does not have the right to his own views and opinions you are in an environment akin to NAZI Germany!

Have fun!

WHAT!! We do not go off on tangents in this forum! Why just the other day I was shopping and I bought some dog food for my Great Dane. That is totally relevant to flying foamboard RC aircraft! I am absolutely not responsible for going off post, or hijacking a thread! I seriously don't see where you're getting that stuff from. You need another beer. Wait. No. I need another beer.

Yeah, I wish we could just accept history and learn from it. Symbols are powerful, however. To you and I they are just that, symbols. So many others just want to hate on something, and they do. They focus on the symbols.

Southern Arizona? White stuff falling from the sky? Must be a drug drop gone bad. Get indoors. Don't ingest any of it.
