Scratchbuilt Wing-

Ok, after crashing the Funbat enough times that required more props than I now care to count
Is it really possible? What am i doing wrong? At least 2*100 flights and only one broken prop. (The noses are a bit soft).

My sons opinion is that the FUNBAT is easy to fly for everyone - but that is probably not the fact - mother has not tried yet.

My first one flew much better too. I'll give it another shot sometime in the near future. It was just too easy to build not to. I have a new motor and battery that are lighter that I would like to try with it.

Here's a much overdue update on the Wing.

10) I cut out the ailerons.
11) I glued on the motor mount.
12) I attached the ailerons with some small plastic hinges I got from HK. I've never used them before but they are allowing the wing to swing freely. I installed the elevon servos on their sides running the wires between the layers of foam. I made and installed the push rods.
13) I installed the motor, ESC, and rcvr and connected up the 3 channels.
14) The battery I just Gorilla taped in place thinking I might have to adjust my CG. The belly I want to leave smooth.

So with everything looking so nicely I thought it was time to do the maiden. Ah yes, the maiden, well let's say that wasn't as pretty. Technically I suppose you could call it a flight since it did leave contact with the ground. But the nose shot right up and looped over all in about a second's time. I decided to cut power and reconfigure the CG solution. I am looking at either increasing the nose weight or I have another thought. What if I vectored the thrust slightly downward?

To shift CG farther forward I will have to either add dead weight to the forward area or lighten up my tail which would mean notching the motor area farther up. But I want to try this thrust idea first if I can without beating up the airframe too badly.

Also, the hinges I'm using snapped on the starboard elevon, both of two hinges. So I will either replace them (I have plenty) with more or I will go back to a tape hinge which has been fairly reliable.

By the way, if you're wondering if I'm wearing a whitish yarmulke on my head the answer is, no.
I never noticed that there until now. My body has been giving me all kinds of surprises ever since rounding 40.

Don't change the thrust angle yet.
Flying wings like the thrust angle lined up paralell with the bottom of the wing.
Once you get the CQ sorted you can then fine tune the thrust angle if needed.
Sounds like you are either tail heavy or just have too much reflex in the elevons.
How far back is your CG?- Did you use a CG claculator? http://fwcg.3dzone.dk/

Ok. I'll look to have the CG right before I go off on any experiments. I'm likely way too tail heavy. I think I'm going to have to add some dead weight to compensate.
Thanks for that calculator. I've never seen that. I'll play around with it and see how much it helps and then report back.

Thanks!

Just curious, are your electrics on the top or bottom of the plane- Won't make a difference on how it flies, we just like to set ours up with everything on top since they are all belly sliders...
Looks like a fun project.

Belly slider it is. The pic and #14 both attest to my fondness of that as well.

It'll be more fun when I get to actually fly it a bit. The work week is starting back up though so I'm not sure how soon I can get back to work on it.

well this is my first comment ... i beginner to rc planes in terms of flying experience. But i have build my own plans and converted them to pdf's. Right now i have build rc wing which is pretty close to swift i have made it using my own airfoil shape using my own scratch build foam cutter bow.. i have done the glide test successfully and even with all the electronics its fine. i will definately upload pictures
