A dead stick is manageable, as long as you have some altitude to recover when it dies.
Regarding the Rx battery, you just have to be religious about making sure it's in good health.... Last fall, I lost a Seagull Extra, .60 size, to a brown out that resulted from a weak rx pack. 5 digital servos pulled voltage down enough that it locked up. It was one of those instances where I said, "I've got enough juice for one more flight.....". Needless to say, I didn't. You could always go the belt and suspenders route and run something like a Scorpion Backup Guard. I am going to run one in my H9 Carbon Cub. It's only going to have a 15cc engine, but it's still going to be close to $1k of plane in the air.
I love big planes, but there's sure something to be said for cheapo foam planes, at least from a risk perspective.
