Search and rescue UAV

Hello, in my science class we have been given a task to find an issue in our community and design a product to solve it. The issue that I came up with is that Search and Rescue (S&R) drones are very costly ($3000 at a minimum), so my product must cost under $1500, be able to fly for at least 30 minutes on one battery, be able to carry 2-5 lbs of cargo, have a radio range of 5-10 miles, must be able to fly in most weather conditions, and be able to do STOL. So here comes the issue, do I take an existing design and modify it, or make a new design from scratch? Any input will be appreciated!

All depends how in depth you want to get for the project. Most of the cost in real time SAR uavs comes from the redundancy with the gear so if something fails it can still do the mission and or make its way home safely. If this is like for a school project type thing I would think modding the FT "Y6" of old would be a stable and cost effective base to start with. Sadly I no longer see the FT designed stuff on the site any longer.

PM Stefan and ask him about the old stuff like that if they are available or search thru the build videos and remake one from scratch to suit your needs.

eek.. I guess I had one of those reading is fundamental fail moments again..

Key things missed in this episode were STOL, 5- 10 miles, 30 minutes.

Stay tuned for the next episode where Billy bangs his head on the wall to embed more the shape of fixed wing things by trying to match shapes of wings using his skull.
