Simple Scout Mods

Howdy, folks!

I'm wondering if any of you fine folks have modified the Simple Scout to the newest version of the Super Scout XL standards, or, at least, have pondered it? How did or would you consider going about it? I'm sure it'd be a simple mod, but would there have to be any electronic & minor airfoil variations from the original Simple Scout plans? I scratch built the Simple Scout from the FTCA member plans, however, I really fumbled the wing installation & it just flies stupid. It's not worth it for me trying to fix them & the other out of square issues with it. Now, I'm building the Super Scout XL from the SBK & at least I'll have the correct dimensions to start with. I'm not using the bomb bay, so that's just gonna be glued closed. I'm used to large scale (1/3, 1/4, etc.) & other larger type fixed wing available on the market with similar wing spans of the XL, but the Simple Scout is a larger model than what you'd typically see flying in a park. I'd love to have it as a scaled down Super Scout design that has the newest "fixes" the community asked for & received. Thanks!

Best regards,

I built a Simple Scout and it flew great! Until I folded the wings from having WAY to big a motor on it! :ROFLMAO:

Which iteration of the Scout XL was that & which motor/battery/esc were you using for that flight? The '22 or current '25 with the community requested mods with the plans with your FTCA sub now or SBK? I have the SBK & I want build mod the smaller Simple Scout to current Scout XL version.

I might have asked this before, but would you know if I could mod the Scouts vertical stab/rudder similar of the same as the Triplane? As an aside, that Triplane XL is a really night build. I had to lol at the bell rocketing out of the cowling on the first try. Glad you got guys got is fixed so quick. I subbed to you on YT. Thanks for the vids!

I just had the plain old Simple Scout XL (Not the Super Scout) and I used the Free plans right here:

I'm tracking. I have the newest one in the Super Scout XL, then. That's the one I wanna scale down in Adobe, but now I'm thinking I know how to do that as far as print scaling for my printer. I'd just need to figure out which electronics I need starting with what FT already has spec's for since the beginning. Thanks.

I used a Hobby King Propdrive 3548 1100kv motor...Unfortunately they have stopped selling that motor this year...So i recommend this motor here if you want lots of power (Like WAY to much!😂) For prop I used a APC 14x6 prop, battery was a 6500mah 4s but you could use one of the bigger motor options in the link I linked and run a 6000mah 6s, servos were just these 17g servos I got off amazon.

My brother is building the standard sized Super scout...I can report back here on how it flies if you like (maybe a video too!) BTW why are you scaling it down?

I just want the 'ole Simple Scout to have the same features of the newer Super Scout XL. I don't need to disassemble the Simple Scout to fit in my vehicle, but it's nice to have the option because when I drive to our air field I sometimes take 5-6 or more planes me. One has 1100m & the rest are 1300m+ spans. Thanks!

Ah okay (y) I was just going to say that the bigger ones are easier to fly if that's what you wanted.

And you're correct that the XL has more gentlemanly flight characteristics, but something I was just thinking about. Thanks for your input. Also, would you happen to know my interest in rounding the vertical stab & rudder on the Super Scout XL similar to the Triplane XL shape? Pretty much like all of the WWI planes, actually. If it does or potentially alter its flight characteristics? Thanks!

I think it would be fine, as long as it fits 👍 (Just make sure its about the same size when scaled)

Helps a lot to fold down the rear seat back and load from aft. Most stuff today allows it, my Golf will load 1/2 a 4 meter wing, but shifting gets annoying

VW? I'm stuck with a sine seater Honda Odyssey where I can take both rear rows (seat 9) out of the vehicle & have gotten some dry wall & ply wood to fit a few times. However, that's too much fuss for me for a few hours at the airfield. If it's an all day community event or pot luck with the club & families I'll do that. Usually I'll fold the back row down into the rear "pit" (grocery haul or such) just inside the rear hatch. Then I can get the E-flite Carbon Cub, Arrows Husky & maybe one more 1500-1800mm winger in. But, I'm really particular about the inevitable dents we get in the foam so I have to have a Frag-0 in place before I load up. I was even able to get my 1/4 J3 Cub in. The plans don't call for the 108" WS to be detachable but that's what I did with a carbon spar & the fuse is 68" which wasn't an issue. It all works out in the end. We always find a way even in the rare case I had to rent those small U-Haul pull behind trailer. Peace. I hope y'all are doing very well today & staying out of trouble.

Yuppa VW, DIESEL. manual trans. Wings tend to fall between the seats on corners.
!!!!! I haven't seen one of those in good shape in at least 20 years & that one was a 20 year old car at the time I saw it! Yep. Gotta be careful with the wings at all times. Some folks have straps fashioned along the bottom of the head liner to slide them through & secure them. Only thing is how low would they hang as to not obscure rear line of sight.

WE SAID it was the last car we needed to buy. So far so good. Only issues are the VW recalls. I would kill for a Sirocco diesel 2 door. Been lusting after those Sprinters, but the mercedes price scares me off.

Flip down the empty seats and it holds an average sized assembled plane or three, but my 4 meter wings are happier in the F250 covered bed. Come to think of it, all my planes are happier in a truck bed. Surfer van was excellent transport when I had one.
See my profile picture? Wife says I look EXACTLY like Waldorf, and I think he's a lot younger
