I was flying Esoaring with both Ava RES (with over-wing spoiler) built up ships and practiced with that and a Radian with upgraded motor, flight modes and crow-braking.
The Radian could in certain conditions beat the Ava hands down.
It’s horses for courses, no doubt about it.

You are correct. Another guy in the club has an Elf DLG - small, rudder/elevator only/very light. I the right conditions he regularly stays up longer than a lot of other folks.

I put a tiny geared in-runner in one of these and it would stay up all evening on a 2cell 360 lipo.
That was a long time ago.

I'm not sure what class it is, but the winches at my club are pretty powerful. Here's a video of the RES contest from last year. You can see that the winches are built-in to the field.

The Ava is a great airplane.
I had the model with a single centre wingtip spoiler and did pretty well in electric limited motor run flying.
