Welcome to Team Luftwaffe! If you are here, it's probably because you are building a glorious German (or other Axis power) plane that never saw action as part of the 2018 Flite Test Forum Challenge! This is the place to talk with other builders/pilots about strategies and techniques and also coordinate our squadrons.

One important objective we have is to all have a coordinated paint scheme, markings and logos so all the AXIS FORCES aircrafts can look nice flying together, be it defending Germany from those nasty Allied invaders or going to attack them!

Also because not everyone will like having planes with swastikas on them, I recommend you put a simple X instead in the war thunder style.

Good hunting!

Yeah, I love what AircPirateTomadai did with this! He's working on an update too that will fine tune some of the edges and letter spacing so it's only going to get better!

I agree it would be great if someone were able to come up with other standard painting elements that were true to the time period so it's even more obvious the planes are related.

I suspect some people might be going for a true to scale build and paint job, but squadron markings would have been added to the aircraft if they ever did go to combat, so I don't feel bad about adding them to my builds at all :)

I was talking with a few other dudes about possible markings on a discord group, they will try to make a proper insigna to put on the aircrafts.

Happy to be aboard. Standard crosses of the era, I would think, would be sufficient. Some folks can be sensitive to the swastika. I was intending to do a winter camo scheme. It can be difficult to spot in the air but IMO, all part of the challenge.

As for swastika, I was thinking doing the war thunder thing and just put a X, then we can add strips of black tape to take "historical photos"

Full agreement on crosses vs. swastika. Not crazy about anything that messes more with my orientation - I have lost more planes to not knowing which way is up than all other failure modes combined. :black_eyed: I might have to make temporary orange bands for the wings for flight....

I was thinking about doing the late war green camo.

I know it's not very original but it should be relatively easy to see and it looks nice

In fact this guide is quite nice

Since I'll be flying a Ho229, being able to tell top from bottom will be critical. I would suggest some combination of dark top and light bottom with brightly colored tips (red?).

I think I like the early war camoflauge for this - those yellow tips and a good difference between green tops and gray bottoms.

I love LOVE that Luftwaffe gremlin! :p :D Can't wait to see the next iteration.

Another +1 (or -1?) for the Cross>Swastika vote. These are 'spiritual successor' type recreations of historical designs, not historically-faithful replicas of actual aircraft,

Since Josh will likely be flying our design, I'll leave our major paint decisions to him. I do think it might be fun though, for each design/build team to come up with their own "manufacturer's mark". Yea/Nay?

I already said it but im for the war thunder cross, as it's easy to get what it means and can easily be converted into a swastika with black tape if needed.

Wake up! Time to fly!

We in for this? Them little boys can be our escort hehe. If we are put me down for a negative on the swastika too. 100%sure Tom would agree on that negative as well. Squadron emblem on the tail and of course the nose art will have to be the Rockyboy Penguin logo. Maybe my "Fly Angry" eyes on the windscreen hehe. Heck why not go for hot pink n purple camo instead of the green.. You surely would not lose the plane in the air then would ya captain?

Glad to be a part of Team Luftwaffe!
I'm also planning on doing a winter scheme on the top of my Spatz. I'm going to do the JV 44 (Galland's Circus) red and white bottom. He-162s were transferred to this elite unit in the last weeks of the war...so it's not much of a stretch that future D models would be adorned as such.

Balkenkreuze

These are most versions of the Balkenkreuz that were used by the Luftwaffe between 1937 and 1945.
In most cases the crosses used on the planes wings were different to the ones used on the planes fuselage.

For scale issues I reproduced them in their correct visual appearance.
In case you need an other version please send me a PM with a link to an Image where it is shown and I will add it to this post asap.

For some crosses I created an extra printable version at whom the transparent parts of the image are replaced with grey colored areas that need to get cut away.

File formats: *.png
Image sizes: 1000 x 1000 px

How to download as original file:
1. mouse left-klick the image to open the image-view window
2. mouse right-klick the image in the image-view window
3. select "save image to ..." from menu
4. ...

Hope you like it! :)

Very nice.

I think everyone will build more than one version of their plane in order to get everything to fit correctly so we could test different paint schemes on the prototypes and see what fits the best, but for me it would be either end war or winter camo.

mrwhiskers

Ludicrous speed, GO!
I guess it doesn't really matter to me given Im building the He-178,a plane with no paint and no insignias of any kind except for a small "heinkel" below the cockpit
Bare metal will present its own challenges however
