The Funbat

Did Chad forget to pay the heating bill? No, That's just Mr. Bixler's way of trying to circumvent his end of the bargain. This week we see Josh Bixler like you've never seen him before, as they discuss a combat plane, the FunBat from Bloodymicks.com. This simple, well designed foam plane is available in a variety of formats. The temptation to put this combat flyer to the test was too much for a few of the crew members. Losing one competition wasn't enough to keep Josh B down. Oh no, he decided to challenge his boss, Chad to a round of streamer combat. Watch this episode, to see what Mr. Bixler will be wearing next week.

Covering/Piano wire

Two questions:

1. Did you just use covering film on the funbats to make the desing
2. What type/where did you get the piano wire for the servo rods?
Thanks so much!

Design looks like spray paint to me. Look carefully at the elevator control horn; it's also green! Krylon or others (see http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=338329)

Most LHS stock piano wire. Failing that use CF rod with a wire z bend (a google just found this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_W6AQiiDpw)

I'm about to start cutting a pair of these... anyone have any successful power systems (the FT motors are no longer stocked by HK). Thinking 1300kv blue wonder.

I built two of them. Both are covered with Oracover Easycoat and fly great.

First of my funbats:

I don't have photos of the second one (it's all black/silver with I WW german markings).

Camo is dangerous - dont fly with a similar background - my misstake - more than once ;-)

All this Funbatting is inspiring me to build one of my own... They look like a very efficient build in terms of foamboard usage too...

Mine isn't strong enough to stand up... or maybe it's just the 400 gram weight of the Park450 and the 1300mAh 3s in it :)

Which motor and esc are you using? and what prop are you using? Any other tips for making this plane are welcome! thx

I'm using a Park450 motor:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=19035&aff=524347

With a Turnigy 1300 3S 20C - 30C LiPo:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9272&aff=524347

A RedBrick 30Amp Speed Control:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=18004&aff=524347

And a GWS 10x4.7 cut down to 8":

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=10055&aff=524347

Remember only I haven't flown this, and it's on the heavy side as well (400grams). It should only be about 300 grams, maximum 350 grams. It will fly, it has almost 2:1 thrust to weight ratio, but it will need to be flown fast so it doesn't stall.

If you are a beginner I'd go with this setup:

Thank you! Yes I'm quite a beginner. I've only experienced in phoenix flight simulator and helicopters. I have been a few weeks to find the ideal part list from hobby king. So I can start to build something. The problem is that I must learn from experienced people. And everyone has a different opinion. It would be best that a list exists with all used and purchased parts from hobby king. From the smallest screw to the motor to the servo arms to ... But thank you for the help!

first flight

I enjoy flying this more then my Stryker q. It does what I want it to do. Running a turnigy 2026 2200kv (I think) The ss 30 esc and a 6x4 prop with a 1000 battery and a 2200 battery. Both battery fly it really well. First two flights this morning. I'll post pictures eventually. I don't see a lot of room for improvement on this design. Perhaps a little more space for my big 2200 lipo, but even then... it fits

Much more fun than my diy wing and my slow fly.

What wingspan do you have on your FunBat? I'm worried mine will be too heavy on a 1300...

Dont worry - FLY.
The more power and weight the higher speed and more of the FUN - but more hazardous landings ;-)
Just try to keep enough speed when landing not to stall the nose.

Does anyone know if the CG changes if you use the swappable fuselage instead of the regular one? I built it to fit the swappable fuse and am not sure if the CG listed on the plans is the same since it shortens the length slightly.

Has anyone ever tried putting the Bloody Wonders wing design on the funbat airframe?

I want to build something to exercise the dogs. it needs to fly slower then the funbat does

My champ is ok on low to no wind days but all they need to hear is a video of a plane and they start getting excited, and its too windy to fly right now.

Its got teeth marks on both wing tips, center of the body from a exelant air grab from our Luna, and the tails been bit off twice.

I can recommend a flying wing. Something like the Swift or a Teksumo (also known as a Pop Wing) or a Red Eagle EPP wing. They can fly very slow and low, and if you occasionally hit the ground they're very easily fixed if the dogs catch it.

I've exercised a few local dogs with my wing, but my own dogs don't chase planes...
