Long story short, on July 17, 1938, Douglas Corrigan flew from New York City to Dublin Ireland despite not having permission to do so. His request to do so was repeatedly declined because "his aircraft wasn't fit" for the venture. He did get permission to fly from LA to NYC, and then on his way back he claimed to have "gotten lost" when he ended up in Ireland instead of California.
This video is just a slide show and text, but still a good one about Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan's illegal adventure. Or "mistake" as he wants you to believe.
