I'm so frustrated with this... thing, I could spit nails. When on the 1st or second flight, it crashed/"landed" into a small bush, whilst struggling to try to gain altitude getting in the air, little did I know that would be the best landing this stupid Penguin hot-glued back to back with a Dodo the Yeeted outta a trebuchet would ever make!

Squirrel makes better landing

Background: I'm flying at 5080' altitude. Using the 5030 prop, and 2s, it would barely get off the ground. I cut down a 8030 to 6", to clear that huge nose, and that has been giving good thrust. In the air, this cranky bird does one of two things, depending on what I adjust on the ground.
  1. Circle 'o Death to the Left, until it noses in for a 1 point landing.
  2. Circle 'o Death to the Right, until it noses in for a 1 point landing.
  3. There is no third option, other than "stay home'.
It did Circle o' Death to the Left this morning, and tore the nose almost completely off. I did repairs, and went out again this evening, after tweaking the rudder a bit right. Circle o' Death Right, hard crash into the dirt at my club's field. Thankfully, I was the only one there. It hit so hard that it actually busted the tailwheel this time. I have all the recommended throws and Tx setup. I went out, started a fresh model, and did it all over, thinking something screwy on snuck in; no better.

I tried for hours to get a Byme A to talk nice to my ELRS receiver, but no dice.

I knew I was a poor pilot. But this has been truly disheartening. Anyways, thanks for listening.

Gee sounds exactly what happened to me when I attempted to fly my Tiny Trainer! So far the only things that I can fly are the 2 ch. Stem Kits. That why I have a RTF 4 ch. Micro RC that I can take out, fly, relax and remember that this is a hobby and supposed to be enjoyable.

Dang,
That does sound frustrating. Nice write up. I enjoyed how you told the frustration. I'm pretty new to the RC plane world. My first plane was the FT Mini Explorer. Lots of crashing and wings folding and such. I'm flying my third build of the plane. I've finally gotten to where I can fly it with confidence. I'm on my fourth build of the FT Flat Flyer P-51. Nothing but death with that one. I did go around twice once with it (using the aura board), but it then died an ignominous death. I'm building it again from scratch right at the moment. Not sure why. It's far too delicate for my flying skills. It'll bring tears to my eyes if I can actually fly it one day. You're flying at 5080' altitude? I'm at 5300'. I wonder how much difference that makes with RC planes.

Best wishes.

I am at 6200 ft elevation, it does make a difference, just like in a real plane.
I used to be at 400 ft, you can really tell the lack of performance at 6200 ft

dont give up, the mini tudor is a good plane, but I would recommend the regular one, smaller planes can be more difficult to fly
maybe if you can, have an experienced pilot trim out the plane, that usually helps too

Great news! I'm at 6,400 ft. That explains my Alpha Jet crash. I pulled back on the stick and it went straight into the ground. They have been trying to tell me that I forgot to check my servos after a repair. Can't wait to tell the boys it was the altitude affecting my performance!

Seriously, my boys will never let me live that one down. The good news, ripped the nose off but I fixed it and it is still flying today. Just keep flying, crashing and rebuilding.

BTW High, Hot, and Humid are the worst possible combo. They'll turn 6,400 local into 8000' effective real quick!

Okay, so I finally got this sucker dialed in, and it now flies like a trainer.

It doesn't really like to ROG, especially ever since it shed the steerable tailwheel in a crash. So I usually hand-lauch, and everyone is happier. I can get it to take off from the club's glass-smooth geotex runway if I'm patient, and there isn't a lot of people flying.

I didn't realize just how rusty I was until I got this going, and started practicing landings over and over in a huge, empty, pair of soccer fields. My target landing area was the circle at midfield. It's 20 yards across, and I could adjust to any shift in the wind. The players had really beat down the grass there for pretty smooth but soft landing.

I wore out two 450mah 2s batteries, (I think I recharged one in the car too🤔) and busted one or two props on less than perfect landings. These cheap Amazon props, you can give them a mean look, and they break. 😂 I made a perfect bush/small tree landing coming around too low and long for landing, and it cracked the blade! I was alone and my glasses have polycarbonate lens, so I flew it until a nose-over finished that prop off.
