Top Gun Challenge

New challenge,

How about this challenge…. Try recreating the famous scenario in the Top Gun movie where Goose and Maverick take a photo of a Mig while they are inverted (remember the bird? LOL). Can the Flitetest guys take a Warbird and fly inverted and take a good (close) photo of another warbird? I think it would make a good vid and would be some good fun, not to mention quite challenging.

Also, I’d like to see how they would pull this off, because I’m working on taking some aerial photos of farms and could use some tips!!!!!!

Too bad David Windestal went back to Sweden. This sounds like something he has done with his tricopter (just not inverted). At SEFF, David was landing his tricopter on a penguin so I think it is doable. Maybe a bit more difficult given you are doing it inverted.

In any case, even a failed attempt would be interesting.

Let's see it guys!!!!! The photo would make a nice FliteTest banner photo! I need to check out that vid. I'm thinking a P-51 inverted over a spitfire, or the cruiser!

This would be cheating, but what if you made a biplane that looked like an F-14 on top of a mig. You could just put the KF step of the F-14 upside down so then when the plane was upside down, you could would have lift. There are plans out there for F-14s on parkjets, as well as a mig or an F-5 if you want to be like the movie.

Not sure how well you can meet the challenge if one of the planes is not a twin tail. Theoretically, the reason Goose and Maverick were able to get so close was by putting the single vertical stabilizer of the Mig between the dual vertical stabilizers of the F14.

But, there are twin tail WWII aircraft that I think would be legitimate to use like the P38 Lightning. So replace the Mig with the Zero and the F14 with the P38. But that is me.

These are all good thoughts. I do like the two planes like bitogre talked about. Still think this would be fun to watch.

What about an FT viggen and and FT-22? They're both (kind of) jets.

That could work but, with the FT-22 having a prop in the middle of the plane, it makes the maneuver tricky and more impressive if successful. But then, it could also be the cause of a spectacular failure. Sounds like a Win-Win to me.

I really like the FT viggen and and FT-22 idea. They aren't very stable so it would be super tough (well, as stable as some of FT designs). Or maybe just maybe FT will release another jet with plans, and they could use the new one! I think if they could do the maneuver even 2 feet apart that would be close enough. They would have to wire a camera into the cockpit area of the inverted plane.
