Tricopter (Naze32) servo-side motor throttles at different rate

#1
Hi everyone, new here, woo hoo!

I have setup my tricopter with the recommended config of using port 1/2 for servo and 3-5 for motor 1-3. I'm testing the motors using Cleanflight and have noticed the front two motors fire up at the same throttle value (1070), though the back motor (where the servo is) starts at a much later throttle (around 1600).

Is this normal for a tricopter or should all motors start at the same throttle?

I also have a video of the problem here.

Second problem, I cannot save any changes to the servo configuration, do I need to do this via the CLI?

unguardedsnow,
Welcome to the FT Forums and welcome to tricopter insanity! I have a handful of the RCExplorer baby tricopter and mini tricopters myself. All motors should throttle up at the same time. Sounds like the ESCs need to have their end-points calibrated or perhaps there is an issue with the tail ESC.

I have been using TriFlight and dRonin firmware on my RCExplorer F3 FCs and am a bit rusty on Cleanflight. In theory, it should work much the same as TriFlight (which is based on BetaFlight) where you need to do the initial mapping from CLI, and then should be able to adjust the endpoints from the GUI. (TriFlight makes this MUCH simpler though). Can you post a "diff" from CLI so we can look at your current configuration? Pictures are a bonus too! Always good to see what others are building!.

Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome! :)

I think for the Naze32, before I changed the motor config to have motor 1+2 as servo ports, the motors did all spin up at the same time. I did this just to test the rotation of the motors. So when I've moved the cables into new ports and changed the config, it started doing what is also in the video (the video may clear things up a little!).

Here's the dump, I'll post some pics soon:

A "diff" is much smaller and easier to read than a dump since it only shows what has been changed from default. Makes it easier to home in on what really matters without having to dig through the fluff. Looking forward to seeing your pictures and progress!

Cheers!

Hi Joshy, (hi LitterBug)
I went thru this same thing. Some time before CleanFlight version 2 (after 1.4.2), some things were changed in the Naze32 code that left us tricopters out in the cold. Think it had to do with rationing scarce resources in the F3 processor and channels sharing timers.

You can either flash Naze32 version 1.4.2 (I think) or prior and hook up channels up the old way, or you can wade thru all of this;
https://github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/issues/2775
Some people were getting it to work on some boards by remapping in CLI, not me though. That was about the time LitterBug was telling me about DTFc boards and dRonin. In dRonin setting up the tricopter was a breeze. Hope this helps,
Ken

Hey,

Thanks for that info, that’s really useful.

When you say hook up the channels the old way, do you mean for the receiver via CLI?

I think I might’ve tried remapping by CLI but my throttle speeds aren’t correct.

Many thanks!

Josh

Oops I said channels, should have said motor/servo outputs from the fc.

Prior to the change I mentioned the tail servo was connected to output 1, skip 2 then three motors hooked to 3, 4 and 5. After the change it was supposedly motors connected to output 1, 2 and 3. The servo was supposedly moved down to the end because every two outputs share a timer and servo can't be on same timer as a motor. I have a Naze32 10dof rev5 that has the older firmware and servo is on output pin 1.

If you can figure this out please put the solution on here because I'd like to update firm on old tricopter plus I have some Naze32 boards that I wish could use for tricopters. I know plenty of others are trying to figure this out too. Good luck,
Ken

No luck so far, I'm going to try using Betaflight instead and see if I get a different version.

Didn't find an earlier version of Cleanflight to download and do it the older way.

#11
Managed to fix this by doing a motor config as follows:
  1. Connect to Betaflight/cleanflight without battery plugged in
  2. Go to motors tab
  3. Check "I understand"
  4. Take master slider up to 2000 (top)
  5. Connect battery
  6. Wait for beeps to stop
  7. Take master to 1000 (bottom)
  8. Listen for beeps
  9. Now raise master and all motors should come on at same time
In the end just me being a noob at configuring using the software.
