Here Jim ill let the expert explain why you need some type of stablization" If you were to try to fly a tricoper without gyros you would probably crash straight away. This is because every motor has little different kV and the ESC’s aren’t perfectly matched. This means that every motor will react a little differently to throttle input and not spin up to the exact same RPM. Even if you got it trimmed out perfectly, a tricoper isn’t a self stabilizing aircraft. It doesn’t want to stay nice and level. It wants to crash. It would be quite a handful simply to keep it in a hover, especially if there was a breeze outside. This is why a gyro on each motor is used, to make it stable and easy to fly. A gyro is made to counter any acceleration on the axis that sensor is measuring. So if a force (like the wind) tries to tilt the left arm of the tricopter upwards, the gyro on that arm makes the motor slow down enough to prevent the arm from accelerating upwards. Each of the gyros have no idea of the other gyros on the tricopter and only keep tack of their own motor. This is why the gyros needs to be mounted in the same angle as the arms which holds the motors, so they compensate on the right axis."

Here is the complete link on how to set up your TriCopter http://rcexplorer.se/Educational/triguide/triguide.html hope that helps.

No need to apologize, Pat. I was just stating that as a matter of fact. I trust your knowledge of the aircraft and I know my limitations. Larry Callahan always said a man's gotta know his limitations. My skin is a lot thicker than that too.

Your explanations are very clear and concise.

Thanks.

No its my fault Jim, I'm not very good writer and I should proof read before I hit the post button lol.
Sorry again Jim

Say what you want, but you are wrong. You have to be because I know I'm right. I learned that logic from Monkey's post. When you tick me off I'll let you know. You're not there yet.

Anyone sell the tri copter as a complete kit? Something like add your own motors props and batteries etc.

Yes, the Pro Tricopter Delrin kit that is flown by many tricopter pilots all over the world. You can check it out here: http://www.fpvmanuals.com/tricopter

So for how much can you get a tricopter? All you need?

Just roughly...

Kit: $89
Motors: $35 (for all three)
ESCs: $45 (for all three)
Flight Controller (KK Board): $30 or even less
Lipo: $20 or less
RX: $10 (HK spektrum clone)
Props: $9 (for all three)
Prop Savers: $12 (for all three)
Cables/Connectors/Etc: $15
Wood for arms: $4
Transmitter: up to you, but can be $60 or less

All in: $269 plus transmitter

Like with everything else in life, you can spend a lot more... GoPro, LRS, OSD, FPV Cam, Video TX, etc. etc.

Thanks! :) Though I think i'll stick to the Bixler ARF at $82 (No Tx/Rx). LOL

Im starting on mine soon, I just got my kk plus and my final frame design is finish so I will get my parts ordered soon. Material used will be 1.5mm g10 for the frame and 10mm CF square tubes for the arm.

Hi guys,

I'm kind of new to the world of tricopter and I would like to know what kind of radio and receiver would you recommend me to buy? Another question, Is the type of KK board really important? In fact, does a KK board replace the gyros on a tricopter?

In fact you can build a tri-copter using only gyros and radio programming without using a control board as shown in this thread:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1142429

Be aware that the thread has 1037 pages.

Most opt for a control board these days. Usually Hobby King since it is low cost and contains the gyros and programming needed already. There are more expensive and much more complex boards with altitude sensors, autopilot functions and GPS as well as the ability to follow a preprogramed flight course. The sky's the limit (pun intended) :p

David's original Tricopter used just gyros. He replaced them with a home made KK board on his second version. What speaks volumes to me, is that he keeps using a KK board variant on his most recent versions, instead of one of the "smarter" boards with accelerometers, barometers, gps, etc. (Although he does use one on his Y6. http://rcexplorer.se/projects/Y6/Y6.html)

If I'm using the HK cable, do I have to do the soldering part? Because I saw that there is a 6 pin adaptor...
