nice job !! good tutorial !

Doesnt the board need to connect to the radio ?? i missed that part ... (only saw usb wiring and backlight wiring)
There are pins on the other side of the programming board that make contact with solder pads on the main board inside the 9x. That's how the connection is made.

Thank you for posting! I think I can handle this. Are you satisfied with the new programming features?
The programming features are great. Just so everyone knows, this board doesn't already include the ER9x firmware. This board just gives you the ability to update the firmware on the Turnigy 9x radio. This is merely a way to get the USB data port on the radio without soldering. There are actually several different firwares you can update onto this radio but it seems the ER9x version is the most popular.

It was actually more difficult to figure out how to update the firmware than it was to install the programming board.

Was it worth it?

Im sure its worth every penny but my question is; how much we need to invest in the turnigy 9X to become a competitive radio ?

tx/rx = 40,00
board = 45,00
Frsky module = 16,00 / 25,00

So you end up paying almost the price of a DX6i or a Futaba 6EX or optic 6ch (all entry lvl good quality radio)

does it worth it the investment ? at the end you get a much better radio for less ?

Im asking it because i have a 9X on backorder :D; should i invest on it or save the $$ for a DX8 / 8FG in the future ??

Edit: somehow i answered myself, its not such a big investment anyway ...

To update the firmware I first searched for videos on YouTube and Google but most were very long and included a bunch of extra info not needed to flash the firmware. The first thing you have to do is install the USBasp drivers so your PC recognizes the programmer board. You can download those from here

http://sourceforge.net/projects/lib...1.2.5.0/libusb-win32-bin-1.2.5.0.zip/download

You then need to install the eePe programming software, found here:

http://eepe.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/eePeInstall.exe

You then right click and download the latest stable ER9x binary.

http://code.google.com/p/er9x/

After I downloaded the latest binary file and launched the eePe program it automatically checked and notified me there was a newer version of firmware than I already downloaded. It asked if I wanted to download it and I clicked yes and pointed to where I wanted to save the file on my PC.

This guys video is very droning and hard to sit through but explains everything in a nice visual manner. I ended up skipping parts of the video as not everything is needed.

I think it was totally worth it. I would so spend the approx. $150 or so on this setup than an equivalent priced Spektrum system. I'll eventually get a Futaba 8FG ($425) but this combination is hard to beat. Infinite programming options, a better 2.4GHz system in the FrSky module over Spektrum since you get frequency hopping like Futaba 2.4 systems and way more range. This is actually replacing my DX8. This is a much more reliable system than the Spektrum DX8 thanks to FrSky.

It broke down like this after shipping:

T9x: ~$60
program board: ~$50
FrSky module w/8ch rx: ~$44

My favorite feature so far is that with just turning on one option in the menu you can set the flight timer to start countdown as soon as the throttle is past idle. And as soon as you pull the throttle back to idle and glide around or whatever, the timer stops and then will start again as you advance the throttle past idle.

Here's the screen after the flash.

I've starting to think about doing this to my radio, but I have one question. How does the programming board connect to the main board of the Tx so to allow you to reprogram it? is there some kind of contacts under to board that touch the processor pins or something?

Thanks,

NAM

Ahh, read on my friend, the answer to your question will become apparent!

It seems like a great system, and I have ordered one, but they are on back order till about mid march....

sounds a bit sus, but they say in the last batch they had 3 people buy 60 units, anyone thinking ebayers?

Yes. The programming board has about five pins that sit on the solder pads on the 9x main board. The kit includes stand-offs so the proper spacing is maintained.

I did this conversion about 6 months ago! I also managed to get hold of one of these -http://www.spektrumrc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=SPMMSJR710 back when they were still available, so now I have a Spektrum compatible transmitter with heaps more functionability than any similarly priced Spektrum branded transmitter. I'm ecstatic. The problem with doing this now, is that the Spectrum JR comp. modules seem to have disappeared of the shelves everywhere and I do mean everywhere. The original transmitter is a bit rough in construction but I have had no trouble with it yet. One point to watch out for in fitting that programming board is to be very careful with the fine ribbon cable joining the main board to the radio board. It is very very delicate and you should disconnect it before unscrewing the main board to be safe. (You don't want to know how I know this! ) I wholeheartedly recommend this board and th ERx firmware change over, and, to me, it represents great value for money
Cheers

They seem to have disappeared from the market Spectrum still have them on their website but no one has them for sale. I only got mine second hand from a guy in Germany. It took about 4 months of searching before I got hold of this one. I suspect that Spektrum was worried by loss of tx sales because these units fit any JR style module tx. They also made one for Futaba radios as well. I haven't heard any bad things about these modules so can't think of any other reason to stop selling them.

This looks both interesting and promising indeed...My only problem is the files are executable, Being a Mac user it poses a small problem. I just may have to either partition my HDD and install WinBLOWS or go the Virtual route. Only thing now is to try and obtain and Tx.

Or go to a Windows friends house, that will guarantee it will work.

I have it now... and I would not ever go back! The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the standoffs to stay still while mounting the thing, but it works a treat.

I loaded up ER9x on it, and wow what a difference! There is so many more options, the mixing actually makes sense now, and the back light is just perfect. super system, Cant recommend it enough.
