Help! Twin motor ESC question

I'm building a small twin motor cargo airplane. 24" wingspan, 16" long, 1306 4000kv motors. My question is the ESC's. The only "matching" esc's I have don't have BEC's, so I'd have to use a seperate UBEC to provide power to the rest of the systems. Anybody have experience, good or bad, with using unmatched ESC's? I have a lovely 12a ESC with a 2a BEC, then a 15a Emax ESC I could use to power the other motor, and just solder the motor straight to it saving weight and hassle. It's tiny and only a few grams, nice in this micro build.

Any thoughts from anyone who's already done this? I'm in a time crunch since I'm trying to finish this before I head to FliteFest!

I haven’t tried, but I’ll bet it will mostly work. The ESC is just a fancy switch (or 6) that directs power to the correct windings for the appropriate amount of time. So 50% throttle on one ESC will be very similar to 50% on another. However, differences in timing and efficiency will make small differences. If they’re both inexpensive ESCs from roughly the same time period, I’ll bet you can fly without much noticeable effect. At worst you’ll feel a slight pull to one side which may depend on the throttle level.

There’s one way to find out! It’s safe to try too, since you can find out most of what you need to know from a taxi test. Please try it and report the results!

Like @Mr Man said I would calibrate them together.....The trouble might be that they are both programed differently so that one ESC gives a different "Throttle Curve" than the other one...

Okay, gonna be soldering um up here in a little bit. And this little bird does have landing gear, so taxi test is a possibility. I ran into a snag while checking servos, and one of the aileron servos was bad. Luckily, altitudehobbies is only a few miles from me, and allows pickups (runs the business out of his house). So I was able to get an identical replacement immediately, and support a local business too. So I may yet get in a test maiden flight tomorrow, before I fly out to Flitefest on Wednesday!

If you havent used him before, Altitudehobbies.com! I've gotten various pieces and parts from him, when I lived in Sterling, he shipped very fast. Now I just pickup, and save the expense.
