*Unofficial* FT Simple Cub

Good News! Josh is going to get me the files for the graphics (windows and lightning bolt). After going through the build video there were some extra bevels that I needed to add to the plans too. Once I have the graphics, I will add those to the plans with the updates.

Float plans....very very soon! :)

Hi Sponz! First of all, awesome job with ALL of your plans. Much appreciated to us scratch builders.

I just read this entire forum post and still don't see the window / lightning bolt plans though. Any luck in posting them somewhere? (I have access to a vinyl cutter to make my own, but I'm not sure on the front window shape / dimensions)

Thanks again for ALL you do for the Flite Test family!

FT Simple Cub Window Plans

Ok, so I'm a little impatient. (No offense to anyone) And I'm a firm believer of "sharing is caring." So I decided to make my own window decals in inkscape. I've attached the files. I also added the "sun roof' the carbon cub has in case anyone else wants to add that too. :) HAPPY FLYING!!

And here is what the decals look like installed:

This is my first FT build, and I've got my plane just about done. I bought the "B" power pack components and I'am trying to figure out where the receiver, ESC, and battery get mounted in the power pod, and with what. I know its kind of basic but I've never done one before and in the build video Josh uses different components and doesn't really show mounting them. Advice, photos or video link appreciated!

It can really be in any configuration that makes sense. That statement probably does not help you though...huh.

I mounted my receiver on the bottom of the wing so that it pokes through the hole on the top of the fuse. That way I didn't have to deal with two aileron servo wires flopping around.

The ESC was mounted so that the battery lead goes out of a hole near the firewall at the bottom of the pod. It makes it easy to plug the battery in as it is mounted below the power pod with Velcro. This makes it easy to install/remove and also adjust for balance.

The Cub does not need a lot of amperage so mounting the ESC in the pod it not a big deal. You might want to put an air inlet on the nose to allow a little airflow though.

I got the files from Flite Test a few days ago, but have been busy with upcoming releases. I should have them available soon.

Great work on your window decals! And thank you for sharing them with the rest of the family.

Not seeing too many Cubs on floats. A couple of them really look nice. I built some floats for mine. I have not flown off the water yet...with anything.

Guess we'll see how it goes.

Looks really good Gazoo. Do you fly with any other Flite Test guys in the Green Bay area?

I haven't met up with any FliteTest guys so far. My nephew is into FT and he always wants to fly though. I have a friend that flys every once in a while with me.

The majority of my flying is during my lunch break at work. There is a soccer park that I can burn a battery in.

I've been keeping an eye out for some meetups close to me but nothing yet that I'm aware of. Good thing for the forum to feed the habbit...er...hobby.

Edit: Thanks for the "like" BTW

77% Cubby

I don't have any 'B' size motors but I have plenty of 'A' size. I printed the plans out at 77%. This results in a 29.5" wingspan so the wing can be cut out in one piece from a sheet of Adams foam board. In honor of a nephew recently enlisting in the US Coast Guard I gave it a USCG theme. Thanks for the window decals! I reduced them by 23% and they fit perfectly. The weather is supposed to improve before the long weekend is over so I hope to have a flight report and video soon.

Thanks for looking.

GAZOO, hello neighbor or at least darn close. I'm from Manitowoc and am looking to meet up with other people doing Flite Test planes. Although I have built balsa planes and have successfully flown RC, l am making this Simple Cub my first venture into foam board building. I am even considering adding floats.
My plan is to build it utilizing the aileron wing and possibly eliminating the swappable feature but I'm not sure. Looking for input on that.
I would also like to know what EFlite brushless is equivalent to the B or C pack Elite Test motor? I have an 850kv 450 as well as a few Eskay 400xt motors which I am guessing would be a good fit. As i dont want a powerhouse i am leaning towards the Eskay 400xt as a good fit. Any help here would be appreciated.
I'm hoping we can meet up soon so I can get some direction on my build. I have the plans plotted full size on one sheet and am currently making templates from poster board.

Thanks a million.

Hey Greg. Glad to see a fellow FliteTester close to me. I think it would be nice to meet up to share ideas and burn a few batteries. Not sure which field would be best. You can message me directly if you want. Not sure when either as life gets in the way a lot.

I definitely recommend using ailerons if you are comfortable with them. My second Simple Cub was built without because I wanted it to be a...SIMPLE Cub. I kind of regret it though. It does not have the same crispness as with ailerons. It feels a bit mushy but flies OK still. I miss the ailerons so I will most likely cut some in and add servos.

Not sure about the motor size equivalents. I am using this motor:

Mine has slightly more power than the B-pack. I use a 9X4.7 prop.

Wow, Gazoo, that's a very nice looking Cubby. I think you can't go wrong with a bigger motor. You don't have to use all of it.

First Flight of the 77% Simple Cub

It flies and here's proof. There were a few things that needed fixing. I started off with a 800 mAh 3s battery. That was not enough weight. It flew a bit tail heavy. I had to keep the speed up or it stalled easily. To keep the speed up it needed more prop. First flight had a Gemfan 6x3.5, it had more punch with an APC 6x4 on the next flight. Banking left or right felt normal but it wouldn't roll to the left, only to the right. The left aileron control horn was higher than the right horn so travel was limited.

It flew pretty well despite the defects. It even handled some very windy conditions later in the day with a 1000 mAh 3s up front. I fixed the aileron control horn and added a half ounce of lead to the nose. It should be even more fun the next time out.
