Here's mine, shrunk it down just a little. 12" span, 23g AUW, all balsa, 4 channel. Has bomb drops and floats, but havent gotten to test them out yet.

JG, I used an AR6410 brick for the RX/rudder/elevator/throttle, and a 2 gram hobby king servo for the ailerons. 7mm coreless motor/gearbox is from an old cheap micro RTF (Silverlit Single Wing Plane), battery is a 100mah.

I watched all your build videos for this Cub. Very informative to watch you build. I've always been intrigued by micro builds like this. It does seem to need to fly pretty fast in the video. Have you built micro airplanes with foam sheet? I wonder if foam would be lighter and fly slower? Whatever, your 12" Cub is a beautiful build and flies great. My Simple Cub is reduced 23% and flies with the 'A Pack' motor. You win! :D

Thanks! I've used foam a handful of times on micro models, it can certainly work very well as some amazing micros have been built with it (not mine, mind you lol), but I find balsa easier to work with, just a personal preference. The speed of this model was just due to cramming 4 channels in it...24g AUW and less than 24sq in of wing area...hello wing loading!

Paint before build?

Hey All,
First post here... My 8 and 5 year old sons and I are about to begin the build of a mini Cub. It will be our first plane. (I have flown 6ch micro helis, but no fixed wing) I am comfortable with all of the process for building with foam and hot glue, but was wondering if anybody has ever tried painting their foam while it is still flat, at least a light primer coat, before beginning their build? My main concern is adhesion of hot glue to paint of course. I like the idea of getting a consistent base coat of color down in areas that would otherwise be hard to reach once folded and painted up. Any advice?

I would not paint anywhere that you will need to apply glue. But, must such places will not be visible, so that might not be too hard.

I sometimes paint the main parts like wings and fuselage before final assembly. It helped with a complicated airplane like the Fokker DR1. It's probably not necessary for a simple airplane like the Cub. Applying hot glue after painting may cause the paint to wipe off. Easy to touch up these spots with a brush. I'm using white Adams Readi-Board and get delamination of the paper with water based paint. Pre-treating the foam board with clear polyurethane paint before cutting out the parts has stopped the delamination. I understand the Flite Test brown water resistant foam board can be painted without delamination.

Have you seen the printed "skins" available for many Flite Test models? Maybe someone will make one for the Cub.

here is where I ended up

There were a few delamination issues, but nothing a bit o glue couldn't fix. My 8 year old insisted on taping the seams, and did as good of a job as an 8 year old can.
It passes the 10 foot test. Now we wait for good enough weather to maiden.

I would add a pic, but can't seem to figure out how to attach pictures from my phone.

Here’s a pic of one I built to play in the back yard. I have really enjoyed it so far, flies much more docile than my FMS cub! I used a coke can around the TE where the rubber bands go and it has held up well. Flies about 1/3 throttle with the setup I have and nice flat turns. My wheels are a little lackluster but have held up surprisingly well! For some reason it wouldn’t let me upload more than one picture. Bummer!

I built the simple cub, and darn it if im all out of servos for the wings. i do have some metal servos but i like to save them for the planes i fly hard like my FT spear or spitfire. So while im waiting for a plane to go down(bushmaster is getting pretty soft, and the once hard to fly ft racer just wont go down) so i can scrap the electronics, I've decided to Build an almost 160% simple cub.

The goal was to get the wingspan to 60" so i could keep the wings on 1 sheet of foam. But, they're longer also then the 20" dtfb. so the wingspan is about 62-63 so far(hehe just beating the ol' ladies Ft guinea pig). waiting for everyone to wake up here before i go stretching out tape, but the body is cut out and one wing is cut out. So far, its looking pretty cool.

I use a 3536 1450kv with a 9x6 prop on my ft spear with a 5500mah 3s, and shes pretty quick. i think this will be the set up i use on my "not so simple cub". They have said that when enlarging the planes they tend to become tail heavy. i think this setup will help with that issue.

Printed out floats. if it ends up flying good. i will make one with my ft foam board for water. I was gonna start with the floats as this is my first enlarged plans plane. But, i was starting to worry about my thrust ratios so decided to wait on them for now.

What kind of servos are you planning to use? I'm thinking of doing the same thing to the FT Racer and thinking I might need to use "standard servos" instead of 9g's.

Here is my simple cub, and my not so simple cub(enlarged to 157%).

38"WS simple cub is using 2217/9 950kv, 30a esc, & 2200 3s, 8x6 prop but will probably go to 9x6 or 10x5
59.5"WS notso simple cub got 3536/5 1450kv, 50 esc, & 5500 3s-Can also run 4s though 1077g without battery

neither one maidened yet windy and rainy! still need some servos for the small one. Big one is ready.

Build was easy enough though. this was my first enlarged plans plane. stuck to the plans but i put a brace between the fuselage on the inside. tail seams solid enough but i am thinking about putting some guide wires on it(lessons learned from other flitetest planes). I didnt even notice till the end that pipers have wing struts. the simple cub doesnt, and i do use carbon arrows for spars so we shall see how it goes.

I have begun the process on this one. Paper templates are cut out, all foam pieces are cut except for the fuse. About to join the wing halves.

I must say, after watching the build video I like the landing gear setup on the Cub better than the Storch.

Wheels

I build my own wheels. I use pool noodles and saw them to about 1.25 inches and hot glue bottle caps (I use Adkins shake caps because they are super durable) and then melt the axle holes in the center. Cheep, light weight and look good.

I mount them on a piece of Coroplast that gives the fairing look and significant support. Being cheep, you can use landscaping flags from home depot for the gear wire. I ran it through the flutes in the coroplatst and then mounted the wheels with hot glue to hold them on.

My mount is movable and is held to the bottom of the cub by rubber bands. I also use rubber bands as shock adsorbers to cushion landings and it works awesome sticking landings that otherwise would result in a bounce.
