Made the mistake of not ordering wheels when I ordered the Cub. Can't seem to order the ones on the site without buying another Cub! Much as I like it, I do have a wife too..

Any ideas on commercial wheels that will fit the landing gear wire provided in the kit?

Was at the local hobby shop last night picking up wire for my landing gear. While there i was looking at wheels and tires and they had a ton options. Really comes down to what you want it to look like. I guess the original j3 had smaller tires but ones that were turned into bush planes used the larger balloon type tires. I saw options for both at the hobby shop. between $6 and $9 at my shop. I would just bring the wire in, otherwise I think the wire in the kit is 1/8" according to this: https://store.flitetest.com/thick-landing-gear-wire-2pk/

Go to the hobby shop, grab a stick of 1/8" (3mm) wire and hold it up to the wheels to find ones that will fit.

I like the big wheels so I would go for a 3" set but I would guess 2" is more scale for the original j3.

Saw that but the wheels for the Cub are 2.75 inches. Gonna see how much the local hobby shop is going to gouge me or Motion RC has some nice 3 inch wheels that I will just have to ream out the axle hole.

Top Flite Lustrekote Spray Cub Yellow

Has anyone tried the Top Flite LustreKote spray paint with FT water-resistant foam board? I noticed that they make a cub yellow color, and was thinking it might be an easy way to get the classic cub yellow look.

Simple Cub Windows and Lightning Bolts

First off, a Huge Thank You to Josh, the FliteTest team and Sponz! You do a tremendous job of bringing great designs, excitement and creativity to the RC hobby and through your efforts bring new people into the hobby.

For windows and Lightning bolts, you can easily pull up some 3 views of a Piper cub, scale them to where you think they look reasonable and print them out for masks for the windshield and side windows. It takes only a few minutes. For the lightning bolts, I just drew one on a sheet of paper and cut out on tape. I know that they are not to scale, but look somewhat scale-ish on the completed plane.

One other note, just adding a small piece of Foam Board at the back edge of the wing bottom eliminates the creasing of the trailing edge under the rubber bands. I have about 20 flights on the yellow cub and no issues with the creasing. Same thing I did on the Storch.

I haven't actually cut them yet but I made my own window drawing thanks to a certain aerial simian posting a photo of his kit on FB I just opened his photo in inkscape, scaled it based on the firewall in the photo and then traced the window shape.

I haven't dug up a good source image for the lightning bolt yet...but will probably do similar.

I've built up a first go at the cub cut from old stock DTFB with my needle cutter CNC just to test things out. I'm anxiously awaiting plans for the floats and will be cutting a second out of waterproof foam to go with those - but I only have a dozen sheets or so of WP foam so wanted to test my gcode on the cheaper DTFB first. Will probably build the DTFB version 3ch for my wife to try and do a nice aileron wing on the WP version for myself

Glad I did it too...I did find a few minor errors I made in preparing the files for cutting (left out a score on one wing, and cut the bevel guidelines as scores instead of guidelines.) Nothing that will prevent the resultings parts from flying...but still glad I ironed out my little mistakes before cutting the more expensive foam.

Good News! Josh is going to get me the files for the graphics (windows and lightning bolt). After going through the build video there were some extra bevels that I needed to add to the plans too. Once I have the graphics, I will add those to the plans with the updates.

Wow! Love the paintwork! That looks really good.

As for the windows, mine are finished. I was a draftsman back in the day, and still have all my equipment. A few minutes with a straightedge and French curves, et voila. Done.
