Gonna be in the high 50's today. Since I seem to have bad luck taking off from the ground, I may try my hand at hand launching.

Yep! Still not entirely sure why I can't get a plane off the ground. I guess there's a lot of wind sheer around that barn. I'll just have to hand launch my planes for the time being.

Could it be that your landing gear is to far forward?? If the rotational point of the landing gear is to far forward, then that could cause your problem... The landing gear should just about always be a little in front of the Cg for taildgraggers.👍

More than one aircraft is involved, so no. Like I said, it's most likely turbulence around that barn. What I MAY do, is try the driveway & see if that's any better. But for now, hand launching assures a flight with minimal damage.

How? How can a foam plane be tail heavy with everything crammed in the nose? I threw the plane & it flew straight & true until nearing the end of the flight, then curves upward & stalls??!! I did it several times, just to be sure??!! You'd think if it was gonna curve upward, it'd do so from the BEGINNING of the throw?? Can one servo really cause it to be tail heavy??

The landing gear has sustained severe structural damage, so I'll have to repair it before continuing.

Can someone explain why foamboard aircraft are naturally tail heavy? Josh has said this numerous times, but never said WHY it happens......

Well. Without the electronics in it, there is more foam weight behind the centre of gravity. Making it tail heavy. When you add the electronics in, it should cancel out the weight behind the CG, or be a little nose heavy. But never tail heavy... As that plane will only fly once

I understand the concept. But the rudder & elevator are 2 grams, and just ONE of my lower wings is 5 grams! So again, how can the plane be tail heavy, when all the data says it shouldn't be?

Ok, I did find that the lower wing was too far forward, so I will correct that on the next one.

This is a Seesaw issue.
the 2g is acting 600mm behind the CG, where the from (firewall) 2g is acting 150mm in front of the CG. The Tail has 1200g-mm of rotation force (moment) CCW and the Firewall has 300g-mm CW. This has a Net 900g-mm CCW force on it. When it is ZERO, we have no tendencies when flying. To balance this example the wall needs to be 8g (4x heavier) at the same location.

in a plane 2/3 of the craft weight is about 2x as for behind the CG as the front 1/3 of the craft. If you notice, as Motors have become lighter, (from the 20s to the 40s) the nose/ motor placements of the planes have gotten further in front of the Wing Spar.

It is one of the Reasons, the Remington Brunelli -2 model is hard to nearly impossible balance without ballast. those early engines were heavy! (relatively)

Ah, thank you! So as per the Fokker D.VII.......All 3 or 4 servos MUST be under the top wing & everything else crammed in the nose?
