What Did You Fly Today

The wind has stayed flyable so I maidened @SP0NZ ' Wonder Racer and had a nice flight with my Staggerwing. The snow is getting slushy so I had to hand launch but the flying was great.

Your right about flying "Sponz"s model. Excellent stability and with a few modifications can be an airplane that you can use in high and gusty winds. It is really simple and quick building model.

Good news is that the videos I shot on Saturday have actually come out mostly OK. Here's a quick screen grab....

Recalibrated and tuned both my FlexRC 3" Owl Drones. Switching them over from my DX8 to the TX16 at the same time. Nice upgrading from 3 flight modes to 6 too!!!!

Playing with some higher blade count props too.

A club mate got some video of the Hunter this morning. It isn't easy to see against the grey skies, but for what it's worth here is proof of flight!

Ooooh, that is soooo cool. What amazed me was how quick U got that put together. I've been eyeing an RBC kit for awhile. They go together very much like your Hawker. Like I don't have enough unfinished projects in my basement, ( that I am still putting together for my work space ) but now, U R making me order one. @ first I couldn't decide between the Panther or the P-80. Now I'm looking @ the Hunter. I Curse U

I can only apologise! Haven’t seen the RBC kits, but this was surprisingly simple. It’s a good basis for a model as it’s basically just a long cigar shaped tube with some flat plate wings. If you do get a kit I’ll be watching with interest!

Dusted off the old HalfPipe Delta and took it for a spin today.

Bit windy for it, but was of course reminded of how forgiving and stable I made it. I forgot how hard you have to bank it to turn against the wind, did strike the ground at one point by turning too hard one way then overcompensating the other - good thing it can take a whack.

I should've charged a 3S for it. Flying against the wind, it drank up the 500mAh 2S in about 4 minutes!

I put some retracts on the Big Spit and let 'er rip today.

Amazing! Not enough retracts being used around here. I'm trying to pick up the slack myself, but that requires me to get off my butt and build some proper planes!

I must have had the volume down low when I watched the other vid of it, I did not know it sounded like that, I love that sound!

@CrshNBrn @mastermalpass,

I've never had retracts. Still working up to that level of flying and not crashing. I'm pretty hard on just music wire LG.
I'd like to do some retracts on some of my models. Probably not... on the WW I planes, but... ;)

I'd like to 3D Print them. I just checked the Resources and don't see any. I also checked the whole forum, but I'm not sure if the search was valid. I didn't see any hits there either. Checked Thingiverse and they have one. I downloaded it and inspected it. It appears to rely on the servo to keep it vertical while on the ground.

Are production ones like that? I would have thought any good side loading would just strip the servo gears and fold up the LG. Or are they relying on some big honk'n, metal gear servo capable of 10 kilograms? And when flying any G loads trying to pull them down would have to be resisted by the servo... eating up your power. I would have thought they'd have some form of locking like a real plane. They don't rely on the hydraulics to hold them up/down.

Scouted a place called 'Broomfield Hill'. Nice place, but the National Trust are landscaping it by way of having cattle graze on it. The cows were far away, all laid down and chilling over the crest towards the opposite side of the field, but I thought I should still play it safe and stick to a small plane. This shall be a flying field for the smaller, quieter models.

Next I found a huge sweeping hillside, but something was causing signal lock. I started to bring it round but then the signal locked in the worse possible position:

Luckily, this time around, it woke up at the last millisecond and just dodged the crash:

I then did some tests on the ground and found that sometimes when I lost connection, the motor spooled up. I wasn't just losing signal, another signal was interfering. This was most likely to happen when my antenna was pointed towards the coastline... Or rather, towards that nuclear power plant, appearing as two blocks on the edge down there.

But, it's miles away! It couldn't create an EMF that big could it?

Oh well, the air might not be safe there, but at least the ground was good!
