What Did You Fly Today

Managed to actually maiden the spotty Jag LOL ive not thrown a jet/plane in a long time
maybe thats why i crashed it on maiden launch LOL but she does give of some torque roll mwoahahahahaha
I tried launching a Funjet for a club mate at the weekend. Went in exactly the same as yours, only from higher up due to my “enthusiast“ throw. It’s about 75% hot glue already, but I expect it’ll be back next weekend! Yours is a work of art by comparison…

Lol love it 👍 mine is still a crashable piece of foam that can be held together with hot glue at a moments notice lol

@Adam F what a great start. Good idea to just glide it. Did you rebalance it - check the CG - after the motor came off or did you glide it with the motor on? You don't need to stick with Adams in the nose. You can use balsa, paint stir sticks or harder foam board. Just check the CG when you're ready to fly again. You probably won't get a thermal till you get about 50 feet up.
I did check the CG fairly frequently, as the battery tends to move around a lot, even with tape.

looks awesome buddy, get a camera mounted on your hat, yes an extra person actually filming is what we all need LOL

All my flight vids are shot by my phone. I hit record, then slot it into this thing:

I prefer it to having someone else film. It's easier to keep the plane in shot when the person telling the plane where to go is the same person telling the camera where to look. You can always tell when someone else is filming when the plane suddenly pulls up and flies off the top of the screen.

Of course, the drawback to using a 'hat cam' is sometimes you get the angle wrong and most of your footage is just empty sky and a plane popping in from the top or bottom of the frame from time to time! 😂

You need a site. CapPod Even with a site, I found that I don't quite have the discipline (yet) to both fly the plane and track the plane with the hat. I found that my eyes must be doing most of the fine tracking of the plane and not my head. The problem is exaggerated by any zooming you have on the camera. I found pretty good tracking with 1x, but at 2x I started missing more, but had better view when on the plane... I haven't even tried the 5x and 7x my phone can do at 4K, 60 fps. Maybe someday....

I'm not bad at following the plane with my head. I often turn my whole body to face it. Dunno why, but that helps me keep orientation. I have a good feel of what pitch my hat needs to be to keep in shot now and that's all good for 1x zoom.

My phone does hax 2x Optical zoom, but as you say, it's harder to keep in shot. Besides, I like to get my planes passing close to the camera anyway. 😁

I might consider this if I take smaller planes to the club though. You can't stand in the middle of the flying area at the club.

Got up earlyish this beautiful calm morning to test the Su-26. I had signal problems last time I flew and wanted to test that it definitely wasn't my radio equipment, so the HalfPipe went up first:

After doing half a lap of the field, crashing into the top of a birch, 'ker-plunking' down the branches then being thrown again and doing some full laps, I was happy that my radio equipment is all good (I did change the batteries in the Tx, for good measure).

So, time for the Su-26. I may have made a mistake in not making the tailwheel steerable. I tried to start the plane pointing left from the runway, but it would torque its way over anyway.
Screenshot_20230219_090834_Gallery.jpg

On the second attempt, I did just about manage to clear the ground as I went off the strip:
Screenshot_20230219_090841_Gallery.jpg

But I went up a bit steep - I probably could have throttled up and gone from here, but I had already chickened out at this point and throttled back:
Screenshot_20230219_090849_Gallery.jpg

So, it flopped back down.
Screenshot_20230219_090857_Gallery.jpg

Now that wasn't a very long drop was it? But look what that did to the starboard landing gear!
Screenshot_20230219_091025_Gallery.jpg

So, though I probably could have throttled up and done a maiden, this was probably for the best. For all I know, a proper landing attempt would have just torn the gear off, snapped a prop and dented my nice engine nacelle. I'm gonna need a stronger set up. Maybe instead of decorative foam legs, I will reinforce the gear with aluminium strip:

Hopefully that won't make it too heavy.

The aluminium will be quite light and strong, just be prepared to bring pliers or something similiar to the field to bend the landing gear back into place, because aluminium bends easily.

Goodluck and happy flying!

So, with the rest of the day forecast to be lovely, I returned to this spot again.
Screenshot_20230219_133416_Gallery.jpg

What with the Su-35 losing signal and nearly crashing here last week, the HalfPipe once again went first. But I didn't launch it. I set it on the ground, went down the hill a bit and tested the signal. Just like the Su-35, the elevons didn't just get stuck, but the motor also spooled up on its own... What IS this place?

I put the plane away and ventured into woods behind this hill. Last week my partner and I noticed many of the trees were infected with some strange diseases, making them nobbly, splotchy or scaly:

Screenshot_20230219_133425_Gallery.jpg

Some of the trees have long died and broken apart:
Screenshot_20230219_133432_Gallery.jpg

Screenshot_20230219_133442_Gallery.jpg

Also, last week after night fall. An unidentified creature made a weird kind of bark / cough sound. It was deep, so deep I thought it would be a deer. But when my partner shined her light on them, two pairs of eyes at fox/badger height moved on. But this noise does not appear in videos for badgers or foxes.

So considering the all the trees dying, the mysterious beasts of the night and my planes becoming possessed, I can only conclude that this hill is cursed. 😂

Or, who knows, maybe the new nuclear power station down there had a meltdown that somehow didn't make the news!

Update: just tested the truck on the hill as well. It too loses signal, but it doesn't start running its motor.

Hilly places usually have weird RF inteference...

@Adam F - Checking the CG frequently is a good thing and I used to do it every single flight. I've become a bit more obsessive though which has made my planes last longer and fly better. I try to use the same battery every time I fly or one exactly like it. I still use a tiny bit of velcro to hold it in but I've also taken to wedging pieces of foam around the battery (which I keep in the plane). To find the best CG I'll slowly move the battery back by taping a piece of DTFB to the front of the battery. At some point I might have 3 or 4 pieces taped to the front of the battery which I'll take off and glue to the firewall (I don't use a powerpod). My launches and flying have become a lot more consistent.

So, just chilling, enjoying the view, but at this point more looking at my phone when my partner says; "Oh hey, someone's flying a glider."

... Is that so? Confidence = boosted.
Screenshot_20230219_161655_Gallery.jpg

He wasn't up very long. He said he wasn't sure if he's actually charged his batteries. 😂 It's a nice glider too; carbon fiber fuselage and balsa wings - good idea to play safe with it.
Screenshot_20230219_162255_Gallery.jpg

My Halfpipe drank all it's battery by that point too. So, next up was the Su-35. This shot, just as it's been launched, is the best still I have of it. I kept it UP, away from the hillside!
Screenshot_20230219_162607_Gallery.jpg

And after a good few laps, up nice and high, while flying straight and level... It lost signal! 🙃 This time, fortunately, it lost it in a fairly stable glide angle and the throttle cut out. It was able to hold its own until signal returned, the throttle came back on and I immediately turned it back towards me and made that glide slope a landing approach. I guess the Su-35 is just a bit high-risk when it comes to dodgy signal, for some reason.

@mastermalpass - I 've got 3 DTFB planes I don't check the CG on, a swappable Spit, 13th Squadron F6F and a 60% Kwik Fly pattern plane. They all have glued in firewalls. Once I figure out where I want the CG I put a spacer behind the firewall and push the battery up against the spacer. I have a small amount of velcro on the plane and the battery and then I pack foam around the battery to hold it in place. Consistent battery placement is the key. So far I haven't had any overheating issues.

The 3S 2200mAh battery slides between the paint sticks up against the firewall. Foam next and then the wing goes on. If you're careful you get the same CG every time. I try to do this with my gliders too.

Gorgeous glider
